Though most lore in the story does not match up with lore we associate with the wide onlook of sirens, it does contain useful information. The romance was terrible. I did not understand Hayes' attraction at all. I can cope with insta-love, usually it even works quite well as it'll speed up the narrative and keep the story engaging. However there was actually zero reason for him to be remotely interested in her. Fine, we'll ignore the insta-love. Then why does he continue to fall harder for her throughout the book, he doesn't know anything about her and she isn't kind to him at all. But alright, we'll accept her dark and mysterious intrigue is enough. She killed his best friend and lied to his face about it, that should've been an instant end to any attraction and Gabi Burton clearly realises it because she tries to explain why he still loves her, but it falls flat as it makes no sense whatsoever. Add Stella Rivers to the mix. She’s Cole’s ex-wife, and once had a dazzling film career herself. After some very public mishaps and a problem with alcohol, she NEEDS this film to work so she can regain ground. The story is told from the POVs of three women and I loved all their arcs. However, while Felicity had a more distinct voice, Taylor and Stella sounded very similar at times.

That being said, I'm *especially* glad I read this gem. This book is honestly one of my favorite books of the year and I am sure will become a favorite series. It is a fast-paced story with a lot going on and a lot of tension brewing. The world building in this is so fantastic. We don't get info dump, rather we get a steady stream of info that makes it easy to follow the fantasy world and understand what's going on (I LOVE when authors can do this so seamlessly). This book has fae, witches, sirens, and a whole host of other creatures important to this story. And the prince is like speaking of evil, my dad’s the worst. I have daddy issues because he loved my brother more than me. And Ariel is like I didn’t know you had a brother. And the Prince is like oh yeah, I don’t. He was murdered probably. And she’s like did you just say probably? And he shrugs and is like I don’t know. It’s only book one. The author needs some plot twists for the rest of this series, okay?Now let's talk about Kahlen... I kinda like her, but not so much. I'm in a point of my life were I can't stand characters whose only aspiration in life is to get married. I also feel that she was unfair with her sisters most of the time... and half of the book she was just bitter and depressed. Blah... All in all, I liked this book, it was fresh, cute and a fast read, and that's what I needed (because I've been reading heartbreaking, sad books). That said... it was not what I expected. In good ways and in bad ways. Let's start with something I'm not sure if I liked or not, but it sure had me intrigued: The Ocean.

I believe Cass is Christian, so I wondered if maybe the Ocean was meant to be a personification (naturification?) of God. There are definitely many traits of the Ocean that aren't Biblical, but it was a parallel that I saw and it hit me on an emotional level. Any symbolism you may or may not personally see reflected in the Ocean aside, the way in which Cass brought to a life a character that in this world was a type of deity and creator full of undying and jealous love was simply astounding. Kahlen is a siren. The ocean is her mother. She has three sisters at one time and together they are silent until the ocean calls them to sink a ship for her. The reasoning behind sinking ships and killing hundreds of people a year is because the ocean has to be able to have some to save thousands. Kahlen and her sisters absolutely hate the fact that they take lives, but the ocean promises that they will forget her after their 100 years is up and they are free to live as humans again. I liked the idea of the system that the Sirens served, with the Ocean. It was really easy to understand, but it was a real central force in the book. I think I’d love to be a siren for the experience it gets. But the way it was painted in the plot was just unflattering, mostly because it goes against everything the main character truly wanted.Why do we care if they kill the evil king and queen again? Like the prince doesn’t even really like them. Like oh no, an army will come through the barrier and kill people to stop genocide and slavery. How terrible. Pakis, Valentine A. (2010).
