The Atari 2600 version was the first official licensing of an arcade game and became the first " killer app" by quadrupling the system's sales. [4] [23] Hansen, Dusty (2016). Game On! Video Game History From Pong and Pac-Man to Mario, Minecraft and More. MacMillan Publishing Group, LLC. p.11. ISBN 978-1-250-08095-0. An urban legend blames the game for causing a shortage of yen in Japan, which led to an increase in production of 100-yen coins; [2] [16] however, 100-yen coin production was lower in 1978 and 1979 than in previous or subsequent years. [17] [18] The claim also doesn't hold up to logical scrutiny: arcade operators would have emptied out their machines and taken the money to the bank, thus keeping the coins in circulation. [18] Reports from those living in Japan at the time indicate "nothing out of the ordinary ... during the height of the Space Invaders invasion." [18]

This is another one that uses graphics from Space Invaders and also the same circuit board, but I’m not sure it’s really part of the series. It’s a pretty standard shooter with enemies that dive down at you like Galaxian, but they have voice clips here and there. The game says this one was really rare in the arcade and is the first time it’s on a home system! This was also on the Space Invaders Forever collection I reviewed last year. It’s a four player Space Invaders game on a wide screen. I think it was only in Japan arcades, and the only time I’ve seen it is on a YouTube video about a recent arcade game trade show. Anyway, it starts out with the invaders coming down in the typical row fashion, but then after a while, they change and fly all over the place and after that, a giant UFO comes down and you must shoot that as the boss. But you have a time limit to do so. It plays pretty well here but I wish I could’ve played it in an arcade! Shiga, Yasunori (2005-02-16). タイトー、往年の名作がいつでもどこでも遊べる (in Japanese). Impress Watch. At the end of each of the 11 levels, you come up against a giant ship which can take the form of a battle of survival or a battle puzzle to navigate. One of these is a ship that rains down laser rain all across the level while another is a ship that’s shielded from the bottom and requires some pinpoint accuracy and ingenuity to defeat. a b Peeples, Jeremy (August 17, 2021). You can enter Free Play and replay any of the stages you’ve already encountered and beaten, or you can take on the much harder Extreme pathway. This much harder mode only has five stages (with no branching pathways), but it’ll take you a while to master it as the enemies here are more aggressive. Your Sinclair. Dennis Publishing (60): 71.
