When standing a miniature next to an 80% scale AT-ST, the miniature will appear ever so slightly larger than they would if everything was true 100% scale. But with a sliding scale, we try to ensure that the objects, terrain and vehicles that are scaled remain within a realistic scale. Stormtroopers Star Wars: Legion Core Set, but as a corps unit, you can include up to six units of Stormtroopers in your army. Their low cost of 44 points for a single squad also makes them one of your go-to options for filling out your army’s rank and file. Though all Stormtrooper units begin using this same basic template, they have four available upgrade slots for you to customize each unit and make it unique: heavy weapon, personnel, grenades, and gear. Just like the Stormtroopers units included in the Core Set, the Stormtroopers Unit Expansion offers the same upgrades for your personnel and heavy weapon slots. By taking the Stormtrooper upgrade, you add another standard Stormtrooper miniature to the squad—giving your squad more firepower and making it harder for your opponent to completely destroy it.The reference to Star Wars Legion being 35mm scale is not due to the height of the miniatures. The miniatures themselves are actually 40mm. But as an object or vehicle gets larger we start to reduce the scale percentage. For example, an AT-ST figure could be at around 80-85% scale. This means that it is 85% true scale when compared to a miniature. Don’t fret the boo-boos. In I wrote in my beginner’s guide to painting miniatures, I am, indeed, a beginner painter. I won’t be winning any painting contests any time soon ever. So while the exact math points to Star Wars Legion miniatures being around 1:47 scale, official kits point to 1:48 scale. Both Bandai and Revell sell Star Wars model kits which are at 1:48 scale. They both also sell model kits at 1:52 and 1:53 scale which will also work well with Star Wars Legion. The sliding scale Using a hobby knife (or a simple x-acto knife if you’re doing this on the cheap), you should gently trim off all excess plastic. If you don’t know what to trim, then trim off everything that doesn’t look like a Stormtrooper. Duh.

So with a little maths, we can divide the actual eye height of a Stormtrooper (1678mm) by the eye height of the mini (35.7mm) and this will give us the rough scale of the minis themselves. Being that Fantasy Flight Games (the company behind Star Wars Legion) won’t tell us the exact scale that they work to. It is very much up to us as fans of Star Wars Legion to work out the correct scale to print our miniatures, landscape and props. Mistakes are simply an opportunity to paint battle damage! I simply pretend the Rebellion hit him with a blaster shot, and paint the mistake area to reflect that. We also know the scale height of the Stormtrooper is 1 17/32″ or 38.89mm. In 1/47 scale there are 6.48mm in a foot. 38.89 / 6.48 ~= 6, so a stormtrooper in armour is 6′ tall. Honestly, this seems a bit too short… if you bump it up to 1/48 a Stormtrooper is 6′ 1 1/2 inches…. but I couldn’t find exact measurements on stormtrooper height IN armour.”

Prepare for Battle

We certainly wouldn’t shrink an AT-ST to 50% scale as it would look unbelievably small and affect both immersion and gameplay. A DLT-19 Stormtrooper from the Star Wars: Legion Core Set or the Stormtroopers Unit Expansion, for example, can blast enemies—even those with armour—from beyond the range of a standard E-11 blaster rifle. Similarly, an RT-97C Stormtrooper found in the Imperial Stormtroopers Upgrade Expansion can maintain these long range shots while also producing a higher rate of fire. So if a miniature or a small vehicle like a speeder bike is 100% scale, and a medium-sized vehicle such as an AT-ST is around 85% scale. Then using the sliding scale an even larger object such as a large AT-AT could be reduced down to around 70% scale.

So the sliding scale steps in to help out with this issue. It works by squeezing the scale of objects the larger they are. For example, small objects and vehicles that are either nearby miniatures or used by them will stay at the correct scale of 1:48. This makes them 100% scale as it is true to scale compared to the minis. Add new personnel to your Stormtrooper units!
