About this deal

It’s surprisingly easy to find (or make) floor cleaner and reusable mop pads. While I prefer reusable mop pads, you can just as easily wrap your Swiffer head in a towel or cloth to avoid buying new products. You can recycle used mop and duster pads through Swiffer’s free recycling program through TerraCycle, but few people utilize it or even know it exists. Wrap these around your Swiffer, spray them with some homemade cleaning solution of hot water and vinegar, and you’ll have yourself a zero waste mop. You could also put your DIY solution into the Swiffer Wetjet compartment for speedier cleaning. Microfiber Mops It’s not the fastest or easiest method, but it gets the job done when you have smaller spots in the house to clean. In fact, it’s how I grew up cleaning floors in my small childhood home. All you need is a a piece of cloth and some eco friendly cleaning solution and you’ll be good to go. Floor Cleaners and Tools to Use When Zero Waste Mopping

These make excellent all purpose cleaning cloths, but they do grip into the plastic grippers of the swiffer or flash power mop.

Between the non-biodegradable plastic that is extracted from fossil fuels to use in refill pads and the toxins from the cleaning solutions, a Swiffer mopping routine simply isn’t worth the waste and risk. I’m also a fan of Soganics floor cleaner poured into a spray bottle for easy application. However, you can create your own zero waste solution by mixing 1/2 cup of white vinegar into a gallon of hot water. This head is compatible with an included microfiber washable pad, rendering it usable as an eco-friendly wet mop or a dry duster. Thankfully, there are plenty of great alternatives out there, from reusable mop pads to conventional mops with a sustainable twist.

Having said that, there is still a lot of work to be done when it comes to truly transparent (complex) supply chains and reassurances against greenwashing. If you already own a Swiffer, it makes sense to simply swap out the disposable pads for zero waste swiffer pads that can be machine washed. After all, one of the biggest tenants of zero waste living is to reuse what you already have until it’s no longer functional. We looked for mop handles made out of wood or bamboo, and mop heads made from organic cotton, recycled cotton, or even just plain cotton mops (when the alternative is something single-use). The microfiber pads are soft and nonabrasive, making these some of the best mops for hardwood floors. Instead, we choose zero waste cleaning products to help mop away some of the mess caused by our consumption.

Still, even the most ethical electronics come with an additional environmental impact, because of the mining of materials and the difficulty to dispose of electronics responsibly. This Bissell Steam Mopis the only thing that works at getting the dirt out of the porous stone and grout. It also destroys 99.9% of bacteria and germs without the need for floor cleaner. Between their zero waste storefront in LA and zero waste online store, they’re doing a good job of it.

In many cases, a clean floor doesn’t exactly translate to a transparent supply chain, so we hope to see more about this from brands going forward. Recommending plastic mops seems counterintuitive to a post about eco friendly Swiffer alternatives. However, a high quality steam mop can last a decade or more, and it eliminates the need to buy floor cleaners that come in single-use bottles. Bissell Steam Mop – Powerfresh Pet Then I estimated where the flaps of the mop cover needed to start around the central pole. I joined these dots to the outer lines. Their 7-in-1 steam mop uses heat alone to clean all manner of surfaces with fewer products required. Making the switch to zero waste mopping is an easy way to start leading a more more sustainable lifestyle.Looking for an eco friendly Swiffer alternative that will keep your floors clean without single-use pads and toxic chemicals? You’re not alone. Once the mop cover is dirty, just throw the item in the wash with your regular wash and tumble or air dry. I placed the mop head on the 1cm seam allowance line at both top and bottom and drew a line along the other side of the mop head.

As a trusted brand for sustainable living products, ZWS’ mission is to reduce the negative impact that waste disposal has on this Earth and its inhabitants.

Benefits of Zero Waste Mopping

This brand has committed to building more sustainable tools and appliances. The goal is to become carbon positive and achieve zero waste to landfill (ZWTL) by 2030. One pad often isn’t enough to fully clean your floors, meaning you’re throwing away multiple with each mopping. While Swiffer products captivated us with promises of speed mopping, they’re now viewed as the K-Cups of the cleaning world. Also, it’s imperative that you wash your microfiber mop pads WITHOUT fabric softener! Otherwise, the fibers will get coated with residue and lose their ability to absorb moisture. Turbo Microfiber Mop Juniperseed’s reusable mop head pads made from cotton and chenille fabric are compatible with Wet Jet Swiffers. In fact, they’re even better at absorbing moisture than the single-use ones.
