About this deal

In Gould’s Goldbergs the lower octaves of the piano had better definition through the Totems, a little more clarity in the upper octaves. But in that explosion of joy at the beginning of Variation 1 the piano tone was a bit more clangy. It’s worth noting that this is a very early digital recording made in 1981, and was miked quite closely, with almost no reverb. In reproducing it, the Totems were clearly less forgiving than the Triangles. Which raises the question: what would we have paid to enjoy the convenience of Bluetooth in the 70s? Plenty, allow me to assure you. A very important aspect in the development of the Triangle AIO TWIN Speakers was an outstanding design. Not only the proverbial French esprit is relied on, but also the cooperation with the Scandinavian specialist Gabriel, who are responsible for the textile covering of the loudspeaker grill.

The left-channel speaker weighs 10.2 pounds. The only connectors on its rear panel are a pair of binding posts that accept bare wire, banana plugs, or spade lugs -- the left-channel LN01A looks like, and is, a conventional passive two-way minimonitor. With Les Siècles’ performance of Ravel’s La Valse, the Fives sounded bigger and more powerful than the Triangles, but slightly less refined. The Klipsches reproduced the bass drum and timpani with greater impact, but sounded a little thuddier. Nor did double basses and cellos have the same growly, breathy quality through the Klipsches -- they were a bit muddier. Violin string tone wasn’t quite as sweet. While the Klipsches created a slightly deeper soundstage, orchestral textures weren’t as transparent -- everything was a bit more homogenized. The Fives could play a bit louder than the Elara LN01As without sounding hard. Though more solid and energetic than any rival we’ve heard, the Triangles are not quite the finished sonic article. They are outshone by the Audioengine HD6 Wirelesses when it comes to absolute transparency and finesse. There is another vital set of inputs. These are for the Triangle turntable. But they can also be switched to a line level input using a slider. Triangle supplies a remote control but provides a volume knob on the rear of the right speaker. This knob also works as an input selector switch but one that must be pressed to move through the inputs. Though manufactured in China, the Elara LN01A is designed in France, so I thought I’d start with a staple of the French orchestral repertoire: Ravel’s La Valse, in a concert recording by Les Siècles under the direction of François-Xavier Roth (24-bit/44.1kHz FLAC, Harmonia Mundi/Qobuz). Based in France, Les Siècles specializes in late romantic and early modernist classical music, using instruments and performance practices typical of those eras.

Each speaker unit is powered by 50W Class D amplifiers incorporating individual bass and treble settings for fine tuning as well as a remote control for easy access. Compact and stylish but with the class-leading sound quality you’d expect from Triangle, the Triangle LN01A are premium active speakers. The matching turntable finished in gloss white is made for Triangle by Pro-Ject, but branded as a Triangle product. Triangle describes the Elara LN01A as a “wireless active speaker” -- but according to the definitions we use on SoundStage! it’s a powered speaker, with a conventional passive crossover that comes after the amplifier in the signal path.Drivers built into the Elara are a 25mm silk dome tweeter crossing over to a 135mm woofer that has a treated paper cone. The tweeter uses a Neodymium magnet. A notion put to the test playing the same version of Lou Reed’s Heroin; one streamed, the other pressed on vinyl. The fabric Bond is used, which looks particularly elegant, is very durable and will be a real feast for the eyes for years to come. As an old-school amp/speaker kind of guy, it took me a while to warm up to active loudspeakers in the hi-fi space. I had doubts about whether they would be effective at reproducing music in a way that would satisfy audiophiles. But advances in technology, primarily with digital amplification, have paved the way for simple all-in-one or just add source audio solutions that actually sound good.

As I said in the introduction, Triangle’s Elara LN01A could serve as a great introduction to the joys of hi-fi -- but this little speaker could also work well as a secondary system in a secondary room. The LN01A can be used to stream music in true stereo from a smart device, but can also serve as the core of a sound system including a turntable, a disc player, a game console, a TV, and other sources. The new Triangle AIO TWIN speakers offer full flexibility as soon as they are integrated into the network, which can be done either via cable or the integrated WiFi module according to IEEE 802.11n. Prices valid in stores (all including VAT) until close of business on 28th November 2023. (Some of these web prices are cheaper than in-store, so please mention that you've seen these offers online.) A compact speaker with minimalist design, the LN01A benefits from Triangle’s historical acoustic know-how. The speaker features a 25mm fabric dome tweeter and a 13cm concave mid-woofer providing the smooth, warm and detailed sound specific to Triangle.

For the past couple of decades, the audio industry has been angsting about how to get young listeners interested in hi-fi. It’s not that teens and twentysomethings don’t love music; it’s that their musical lives revolve around smartphones, headphones, maybe a Bluetooth speaker. How can they be introduced to the joys of listening to real stereo from real hi-fi speakers? In conclusion, the Triangle LN01A speakers are a compelling option for anyone seeking a powerful and refined active HiFi system, with less boxes taking up space. There is also a sub output which is full range, you’ll have to use the crossover on your sub to blend the output with your speakers. A 60-70 Hz cut off is recommended. There is also a volume knob on the rear of the speaker. Over the last year or so, speaker manufacturers have rushed into the active speaker market, and after listening to several models I have softened on the idea. While I actually like the exercise of system matching, I can definitely see the benefits of buying a pre-matched setup. The Triangle AIO TWIN Speakers are active two-way systems that use a 25 mm tweeter in combination with a 13 cm low-mid driver and a rear-firing bass reflex system. They are driven by Class D amplifier modules with a power output of two times 50 watts. The frequency response that can be covered with this solution is specified as 56 Hz up to 22 kHz. Interfaces…. all there The speakers connect with an accompanying speaker cable, and can stand on a shelf, on the bookshelf, or on a pair of stands. Everything can be controlled with the provided remote control, which isn’t exactly overflowing with quality, but it works. (Photo: Manufacturer) There’s a dedicated 3.5mm line level input along with the optical and digital audio inputs. There’s even an output connection to drive a subwoofer for those wanting more bass. And … my old system would be much more expensive if its buying price were translated into today’s money. Where the Elaras ensure Dandelion Wine by Gregory Alan Isakov and the Colorado Symphony sounds impressively substantial and imposing, the Audioengines retort with a more intimate, albeit restrained, rendition.
