We were able to produce an app that met the ECT project team’s needs, all without meeting in person!

The aim of the project is to allow farmers in the tillage industry to adopt CT establishment practices for the long-term sustainability and viability of their farming enterprise. Teagasc’s Enable Conservation Tillage (ECT)project has spent the last few years investigating and offering sustainable, cultural and chemical control solutions and support tools to stop the prevalence of grass weeds on farms. As part of this, members of the project team have created ECT Weed Watch – a unique mobile field app that enables the accurate recording of data at precise locations. However, CRLBF’s revenue numbers provide reason for caution. We have limited our list to companies showing positive and growing revenue, but Cresco barely made the cut, with a thin increase last year. In an industry where profits are often a pipe dream, that does represent concern. The Enable Conservation Tillage (ECT)Project is a European Innovation Partnership (EIP) funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.Jimmy: The project team sat down with Réamonn and ESRI Ireland (the company that supplies the underlying technology and who helped in the design of the Survey123 app), and discussed the important data required from the field assessments. Jimmy: With the right team and a bit of flexibility and endeavour, a solution can be found to just about any challenge! Funding David: I was surprised by how easy it was to customise and design our own unique app. It really was a treat to be able to leave the pen and paper at home. From my vantage point in Los Angeles, California, hemp and marijuana (both cannabis plants) are about as controversial as Swiss cheese, at this point. Recreational marijuana is legal here, as is the case in at least a dozen other U.S. states. That does not, however, represent the larger worldview about cannabis, where the plant is both still illegal and stigmatized in various parts of the world. The international nature of wristwatch sales means that brands that sell their products around the world need to contend with often polarizing opinions about products. I can easily see how a watch brand that produces a marijuana-enthusiast watch can garner as much hate as it does love, given how perceptions about the plant vary from place to place.

Q2 earnings showed marked progress, with CEO Kyle Kazan referring to it as “the best (quarter) in our history”. Net sales jumped 171% year-over-year. Gross margin was 55%, compared to only 2% a year prior.

His anti-marijuana propaganda had strong racial undertones. He persecuted jazz musicians, saying that weed was leading them to make the devil's music. Under his influence, the term "cannabis" was replaced with the Spanish word "marijuana" — a shift he used to link the drug and its usage to Latinos.

The federal government’s Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (MORE) proposes decriminalizing the drug by removing it from the Controlled Substances Act. However, the bill has not been passed by the Senate to date. David Schilder: We conducted a large survey of growers across the tillage industry in 2020 and 2021. With the help of Teagasc advisors, Biodiversity Agriculture Soil Environment (BASE) Ireland, industry and professional tillage advisors, over the two years we managed to get more than 120 farmers involved. They were curious about what we were doing and happy to take part. Jimmy: The app enables all data collected by the ECT team and Teagasc tillage advisors to be accurately recorded at a precise location and in a standardised format. It makes gathering data more accurate and enabled the project team to achieve a larger survey sample without compromising the quality of the data collected. David: It’s been very positive. Team members who have used the app find it to be very functional and easy to use once shown how to. It saves time in the field as it only takes a few minutes to fill out each survey point. A plan was drawn up that allowed the capabilities of the app to work in tandem with the data we needed to record. After a few meetings, we had developed a prototype which worked well. Following further small adjustments, ECT Weed Watch was created.

Methodology

At the time, marijuana use wasn't widespread — but on the radio and on talk shows, Anslinger described an epidemic. He said it was a "shortcut to the insane asylum" and could make "a murderer who kills for the love of killing out of the mildest mannered man." The project is due to end in 2023. By then, we hope to have practical management tools for grass weed identification and integrated weed management available for the tillage industry. A lot has been achieved through this project already, largely thanks to the strong communication between the project team, farmers and advisors.

Legal risks. Possession and sale of marijuana is against federal law in the U.S., while only four states have maintained complete legal prohibition of cannabis. The 46 other states have enacted a patchwork of different legalization regimes governing marijuana. The BB-01 watch dial and case are an interesting design exercise in how to appeal to a cannabis-friendly market. It does make sense that people can simultaneously enjoy watches and cannabis. How they want to appreciate cannabis in a wristwatch is a different story altogether. Bomberg takes a classic approach, which is to create a sort of cannabis lover’s novelty watch. The steel case is 43mm-wide and water-resistant to 50 meters. It is the same as other Bomberg BB-01 collection watches, but it happens to have laser-engraved cannabis Indica leaves on it, making a pattern effect. Since 1920, the country had been dry (in name if not in practice), and he was intent on enforcing the ban.

Now I'm not one for mark naming on the public forums if I've had a good session myself but I think that if a beach is so weeded it makes fishing difficult or impossible, then the reporter isn't going to have caught much hence there's little to give away. Similarly, just having caught something on "a beach" doesn't mean that much because we all have our favourite spots on beaches. Jimmy Staples: Through holding events and workshops, we’ve helped to raise awareness and inform the industry of how to identify grass weeds in field, control an infestation and eradicate the problem. The level of interaction and interest displayed by attendees was emphatic. David: As I mentioned previously, we conducted a survey across the tillage regions of Ireland. The aim of this was to establish how on-farm management factors drive grass weed populations, to identify and assess grass weed levels on farms and to test grass weeds for herbicide resistance. And this anti-reefer hysteria was, at least in part, the product of belligerent Federal Bureau of Narcotics Commissioner Harry J. Anslinger's 1930 one-man "call to arms" campaign against the drug. Harry Anslinger's Anti-Drug Crusade This growth could be impossible to sustain.
