Maladroit received mostly positive at the time of release, but remains one of the band's lowest-selling albums. The album's only singles, " Dope Nose" and " Keep Fishin'" received respectable radio play and MTV circulation, propelled by popular music videos, but failed to really get the album off the ground. There’s very little doubt that the latter accusation was not meant as a compliment, but perhaps its reflective of how enigmatic Rivers was at this point that it never crossed the writer’s mind that he might take it as one. I enjoy this song, it is catchy. I like this song I like it. I find lyrics a little very bad but I like the song outside of that. another guitar solo that I find pointless too, I dont know why so many songs have a guitar solo it ruins the pace of the entire song. song is pretty fun too, I just do not like it as much due to annoying chorus. I find rivers saying "Oh" a bunch to be a really unexciting chorus. Everything else about this song is fine though. I hope rivers beats up my man.

Prior to the album's release, the band created a promotional CD featuring eight songs titled Songs from the Forthcoming "Maladroit", again without the label's foreknowledge, and sent it to hundreds of radio stations. There’s no downplaying what this song is about, so here it goes: “Across the Sea” is Cuomo’s fantasy about a Japanese girl who sent him a letter. “I wonder how you touch yourself / And curse myself for being across the sea,” Cuomo sings. It’s easily the most unsettling song on Pinkerton, but as a portrait of obsession and isolation, it’s a masterpiece. Sure, it isn't a masterpiece and fails to reach the same heights as their debut, the peak-geek-freak amazing record, but Maladroit is really nice.

singing annoys me slightly on this, lyrics do too. that said, there is something about this song I like, I just couldnt say what. song is perfectly fine, not bad, would suggest more barking.
