About this deal

Update: The Xiaomi M365 is arguably the world best-selling electric scooter. However, this year Xiaomi gave the M365 a much-needed upgrade, resulting in the brilliant Xiaomi 1S electric scooter. As we noted in our Xiaomi 1S review, the Xiaomi 1S retains many of the best features of the Xiaomi M365 – including its manageable weight, motor wattage and maximum rider – while adding a few much-needed upgraded to bring it up to speed with today’s competition.

If there is one thing we have learned about e-scooters over the years, it is that the range in the booklet regularly differs from the actual range. The main difference between the Xiaomi Essential, Xiaomi 1S and Xiaomi Pro 2 is the battery. Basically, the battery gets larger from the Essential to the Pro 2, meaning it can cover a greater distance on a single charge (20 km, 30 km and 45 km respectively). It also means the Essential is the lighest and the Pro 2 the heaviest. The other consideration of a larger battery is the time needed to charge it. The Essential takes the least time to charge, whereas the Pro 2 takes about eight hours. A fake scooter may work reasonably well but it is unlikely to have been built to the same standards as a real Xiaomi. Added to this, Li-ion batteries can be dangerous and you would not want to be riding or charging a scooter with a possibly unsafe battery component. Xiaomi, on the other hand, is a reputable company that has recalled scooters when a safety issue has been discovered. To fold the e-scooter, slide the release securing the latch on the steerer tube, pull down the latch until the steerer tube starts to fold, then secure it in place by attaching the lever on the bell to the protrusion on the rear mudguard. Again, it’s simple enough to do without even referring to the manual and you can fold or unfold the e-scooter in under five seconds once you get the hang of it. The main difference between the Xiaomi 1S and Xiaomi Pro 2 is the battery. The battery is, simply put, larger in the Pro 2, meaning it has a greater capacity and can thus cover a greater distance on a single charge (45km as opposed to 30km). This also means the Pro 2 needs a bigger base than the 1S to contain its bigger battery. The overall effect is that the Pro 2 is 1.7kg heavier at 14.2kg (which is actually noticeable because 12.5kg is reasonably heavy in the first instance). The Pro 2 also has more power, meaning it can climb a higher gradient despite the extra weight. Of course, the other consideration of a larger battery is the time needed to charge it.All three scooters come with the dashboard from the original M365 Pro, meaning they offer a speedometer (alongside a few other symbols) as well as the battery indicator. The modes are the same across the scooters (and slightly different from previous versions). They all have "Normal", "Pedestrian" and "Sport" modes, but the top of the Normal and Sport mode is less on the Essential (see below). The Essential's handlebars also differ, inasumuch as they are foam instead of thermoplastic rubber. The scooter's battery is located in the base and the frame itself is built from aluminium. It feels strong and the folding mechanism means it can be folded or unfolded in a few seconds (Xiaomi claims three seconds). This sturdiness and low cost (as you are not paying for carbon fibre) does mean it is reasonably heavy at 12.5 kg; but this is as light as mid-range scooters come and heaviness is fairly subjective: I am by no means strong and can carry this scooter up and down stairs without too much effort. One difference from its predecessor, apart from yellow reflectors on the EU/UK model, is that the external wires are neater in the 1S. They still have not figured out how to feed the wire to the handlebar internally (through the folding joint) but they have at least tried.

Good to know: the rear mudguard is definitely not meant to put your foot on it, nor does it serve as a foot brake. If you do, there is a good chance that it will break off after a few times. Mi Home app The Xiaomi 1S features a 280 Wh NE1003-H Lithium ion battery. You can fully charge an empty battery within 5.5 hours . Xiaomi guarantees 500 charges with more than 70% power retention. The Xiaomi Mi 1S range is up to 30km (18.6 miles). However, the actual distance varies and depends on several factors, including the load weight, scooter speed, road conditions, wind speed, and temperature. Battery It is worth noting that once the battery level drops below 5% the scooter performance drops significantly (if you are in a rush ensure you have it reasonably well-charged or you may find yourself going at an embarrassingly slow speed). That being said, both e-scooters have their strengths and weaknesses. The Pure Air can be ridden on wet roads and in rain, and it can accommodate a maximum rider weight of 120kg. By comparison, the Xiaomi 1S is only IP54-rated, which means that riding in rain or puddles will void your two-year warranty and it can only accommodate 100kg, so it’s not suitable for heavier riders. The batteries will drain faster in colder climates and as soon as you throw a few hills into the mix, the remaining range soon slips away, but we’d say it could still handle a ten-mile commute if ridden carefully.
