About this deal

Since Instructor Athena had given Arthur charge of the group today -- he was supposed to know how to train a formation to combat when he couldn't fly with them and was in training himself -- he decided that the purples would play the “scourgelings”. Their job was to upset the formation flying below. The howls of the very distressed, itchy purple sounded in the air again. Arthur wanted to punch him.

His draconic eyesight was better than Arthur’s too. He gazed up into what looked to Arthur like endless blue sky. “Yes, they’re ready.” She turned to Willard. “You have displeased your Legendary superior, rider. You’re done for the day.” Pretending he hadn’t heard them, Arthur went on. “Willard and Morrice can make themselves useful tending the dragon soil pits — Morrice is a nature dragon. Fertilizer should be up his alley. Then, when the next class is up to this level in a month or two, hopefully, they will be mature enough to join and complete their training.”Four months into the six-month training course for new dragon riders, only Brixaby and the two purples were not yet considered large and strong enough to carry their riders.

No romance or overly stretched overplayed drama (except maybe near the end of book 2) which I greatly approve and enjoyed the focus on the world, the heirarchy, the training and the magics. At the very last second, a rider on a brown looked up, saw the two diving purples, and yelled out a warning.

If you can’t tell the difference between a scourgeling and a dragon, you have no business being up in the air. Instructor Athena,” he turned to the woman. “This pair has proven themselves to be a liability in combat. I don’t want them anywhere near this class.”Athena was silent for a moment. Arthur wondered if he’d overstepped, but he didn’t want to show weakness by looking at her for confirmation. There are classical coming of age elements as the protagonist escapes the worst part of the kingdom and starts to make good (without being saintly) - and then there are bits that I personally find just plain fun. I mean, "All the Skills" - there's a bit of cheekiness there! I've met some books that leaned heavily on 'there's a computer game underneath' but this one is more playful about it rather than relying on it. I found plenty to be satisfied by in the conclusion, but there are a few open mysteries and a bit of a cliff-hanger at the end - lots of room for this to be a full trilogy!

He heard several gasps around him — the rest of the riders had dismounted and circled to watch the show. It hit Brixaby, and Brixaby’s natural magic nullified it. The green was only an Uncommon — the two tiers of difference between them helped. No, no, you'll be fine," Arthur said. "Look, the healers are nearly here." He pointed to the trio of two men and one woman who were running from the hive entrance. It took every iota of self-control not to scream in his face. Instead, he kept his voice level and cold. His father, he remembered, always sounded scarier when he was cold.

Yes, sir.” The instructor nodded. She had been paying deference to him since the moment Arthur joined the class. I dont fancy myself a critique so I'll only voice maybe my dislike for some childish plot twists but considering the target audience I dont expect any grimdark or solidly logical sensible character choices, so with that in mind I gave many parts the benefit of the doubt and understood the author did their best and you can feel it as trusting author most often resulted well, earning my review and appreciation. Arthur wished more than once he could find an Empathy card to feed to Brixaby... but so far had come up empty. Not that anyone ever explains how to do that , Arthur thought. They act like bonding with a Legendary gave me a special leadership card. Ok, I am going to combine grammar and style mainly because there is not much I can say on the matter really. I really enjoy the style that this story is written in. I love getting the odd POV chapter or segment of a chapter. I find that it quite refreshing and that it helps flesh out the supporting cast of characters. The overall grammar quality of this story is quite good, there are still a few mistake but I don't think I have read a single story on here that doesn't have them.
