About this deal

Meanwhile, Edward Ollerton has returned to the valley to rebuild his ancestral home. Hoping to one day to marry and start a family, Edward finds himself drawn to the shy, attractive widow - but not everyone is happy to see him reclaim his estate . . .

Meanwhile, the rebuilding of the Ollerton estate is bringing new life to the valley - but old grudges, and new threats, are disturbing the peace. With plans for the Diamond Jubilee approaching, can the whole village band together to protect their home? Gifts for Our Time is the fourth Rivenshaw series installment. The year is 1939 in Germany, and Christa Sommer gets aboard the Kindertransport unsure whether she will ever see her beloved father and mother again. Once she arrives in England, she is taken in by Mrs. Pelling who comes to love Christa as the child she never had. Lancashire, 1895. Lillian Hesketh has taken a new name, and a brave step towards a happier life. Suddenly widowed after an unhappy marriage, and pursued by her unscrupulous in-laws, Lillian finds a fresh start in the beautiful Ollindale valley. Thanks to the kindness of her new neighbours, Walter Crossley and his family, she finally has a home to call her own - but the threat of discovery by her husband's family still casts a shadow over her new life. Despite all of these issues, the book was heading for 3 stars (just) until I reached the very end. I was horrified to find that I had invested all that time in getting there only to find that the book was totally unfinished, so many loose ends. Presumably it’s the first part of a series but even so, it should stand-alone in its own right and this one clearly doesn’t - we are just left hanging as most of the strands of the story are not explained or resolved. Just too many loose ends. I am afraid I downgraded it to 2 stars as a result.Lancashire, 1895. Lillian Hesketh has taken a new name, and a brave step towards a happier life.
