About this deal

Swatch is another one of the 80s babies that made a mark during the era. Founded in 1983 by 3 Swiss watchmakers, it was launched in response to the ‘quartz crisis’ of the decade. After all, the 1980s saw the rise of inexpensive Japanese watches that trumped the more expensive European brands. Oakley, Persol and RayBan had some of the best we could find. So, if you’re just into retro copywriting or fancy a trip down memory lane, we’ve assembled some of the best and most compelling adverts from the heyday of print. For hip hop fans, the 1980’s paved way for some the genre’s biggest stars. Most notably, the legendary flow and innovative rhymes of Christopher Wallace; otherwise known as the Notorious B.I.G or Biggie Smalls. With his rise to fame in his late teens, Biggie splashed his cash on fashionable garments, accessories and sunglasses as part of his new-found wealth. Famously, we wore Versace sunglasses in several of his aspirational music videos which have become iconic amongst the 80’s hip hop scene. The two most prominent sunglasses were the Versace 424’s and Versace Medusa models which he wore in both his ‘One more chance’ and ‘Hypnotise’ music videos. The designer’s anti-nuclear-missiles T-shirt, worn while meeting then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher in 1984, is now part of 80s fashion history.

Polka Dot Dresses The ‘polka dots’ dress trend stormed the 80s runways thanks to Emanuel Ungaro’s Summer-Spring collection in 1985 and Yves Saint Laurent’s Summer-Spring 1986, and celebrities loved the look; see Princess Diana’s royal tour of Japan in 1986 and polka dot dress at Ascot in 1988. Clothes Cut In Asymmetric Patterns The asymmetric silhouette style was introduced to the 80s fashion catwalks by iconic fashion designers such as Pierre Cardin for the 1984 and 1987 Haute Couture Spring/Summer collections, Claude Montana for Genny 1984 collection, and the Australian designer Katie Pye.

7. Choose animal print for life on the wild side

Some examples might remind viewers of what dancers or figure skaters might wear. This too is rather logical, since artists could often be seen sporting the fashion piece. Prince, for example, wore a white shirt with a sophisticated, airy, ruffled front in “Purple Rain.” The style found itself in many closets in the ’80s. 6. High-waisted jeans favored form AND function Freddie Mercury participated in the move away from low-waisted pants / Denimology

In the 80s, precious metals weren’t that popular. Instead, many fashion-forward ladies opted to wear the trend of the era: plastic bangles. The 80s animal prints were usually focused on big Leopard prints. Often seen on blazers and leotards, it was a design that literally stopped traffic. The easiest way to know your face shape is to draw around your face and hairline using a printed self-portrait photograph or using your phone. The basic overall shape of your face should then become clear. Observe your forehead, cheekbones, and jawline. If they're all roughly the same width, then you likely have a round face. If your jawline is narrower than your cheekbones, then you probably have an oval face. And if your forehead is the widest part of your face, with your cheekbones and jaw tapering down from there, then you likely have a heart-shaped face. Once you've determined your face shape, you can start shopping for sunglasses that will flatter your features. Notable shoulder pads matched vaporous dresses with puffed sleeves to create unique geometric shapes and cuts. 3 /21 These sunglasses are as bright as they get… without adding lights. These neon 80’s sunglasses are a wildly colourful style for any retro outfit. If you like bold style sunglasses these vibrant shades are what you’ve been waiting for.

10. Step into 1980s fashion with Bally sneakers

The colored sheer tights trend continued into the 90s fashion, worn at the office and dinner events. The 1980s was a time of fashion innovation and self-expression. It was almost a renaissance of fashion, with people daring to be different and pushing the limits of what was considered acceptable. Prior to the 1970s, fashion was quite conservative, but with the hippie movement and the sexual revolution came the opening up of fashion to become more provocative. The 80s took that to the next level with bold colors, more skin, and unique accessories. The fashion choices of the era reflected a cultural transformation where people were no longer afraid to be themselves, and that mentality shone through in their clothing choices. Many consider the 80s fashion for women to be the best of the 20th century, and it’s easy to see why with all the creative and daring looks that came out of the era.

Bros did a one-off concert, “Bros in 2 Summer”, which was seen by over 77,000 fans at Wembley Stadium and was one of the first concerts to be shown on Sky pay-per-view. While vibrant shades continued to be hip, another color palette ruled the waves before the turn of the decade. Inspired by Asian fashion – specifically, Japanese Avant-Garde – the runways saw the addition of red and white items designed with intricate embroidery. 80s Fashion TrendsFrom his brand launch in 1968, Ralph Lauren has managed to break style barriers with his classic polos and tailored shirts. They’re more than just fashion remnants of the 80s as they continue to be well-loved up until today. Calvin Klein These bright shades were not limited to commercial brands, however, as even high-flying designer houses adopted these hues. Vibrant suits – mostly mismatched in color – were staples on the runways of Versace and Chanel, to name a few. Late 1980s: Brights, Plus Red and White Although he failed in his local fashion forays, Issey managed to score an apprenticeship with the famous French designer Guy Laroche. He also worked with aristocrat and fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy (of the Givenchy fame).

Lace Clothing with Accessories One of the most famous ‘lace fashion’ moments of the 80s was Madonna’s iconic appearance on MTV in 1984, wearing a lace dress and lace gloves. Joan Collins contributed to the 80s lace fashion trend as Alexis Carrington in Dynasty (1983). fashion saw Madonna and Kylie Minogue fight it out with Kylie’s bubbly, girl next door image (momjeans, kooky hats, big grin) contrasting with Madonna’s seductive posturing (conical bras, underwear as outerwear, Jean-Paul Gaultier as her chief designer). Cyndi Lauper, with her mismatched converse, crazy hair colour and flouncy skirts was an alternative contender. The 80s was the decade of mini skirts, skater skirts, and Rah-rah’s made from denim and spandex (see Kylie Minogue’s high-shine minidresses).Aerobic outfits, gym leggings, oversized sweaters, and even skinny jeans for women were all garments that required legwarmers as a finishing touch. 4 /21 In the 1980’s, Wayfarer sunglasses were a symbol of style, attitude, and power. And no brand was more associated with this image than Ray-Ban. Thanks to their association with celebrities and movie stars, Wayfarers became the must-have accessory for anyone who wanted to look cool. Seen as a critical 80s trend, preppy shirts (also seen in ‘ Light Academia‘) were worn as either a formal button-down or a smart casual t-shirt. 6 /21 Given their construct, stirrup pants were trendy in the 80s in sporting activities such as aerobics, ballet, and dancing, eventually permeating daily fashion looks. After the influence of drugs and freedom of “flower power” of the 70s fashion wore off, the 80s started as a self-conscious decade.
