The first time a drop of alcohol touched my lips was when my grandpa handed me a very small glass of medium dry cider when I was about 14 years old at Christmas time. I remember it well. It was tangy and smokey and different to anything I had ever tasted before. I liked it. This was apple juice, but for grownups. I felt cool and badly behaved, but in a good way. Located near Bridport, Dorset, we run our Cider Farm tours on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 11.00am The apples are left to ripen fully on the branches before they are harvested. After the apples begin to fall to the ground, the trees are then shaken so the branches release any remaining ripe apples. The grounds of the orchard, now a sea of shiny red and green spheres are now ready to be collected. We begin by venturing into the orchards where you will be introduced to some of the 15 varieties of heritage cider apples that we grow at the Cider Farm. During the tour, we discuss some of the fascinating history and folklore behind apple growing and making cider in Britain. We even participate in a yearly traditional Wassail or Blessing of the orchard! We tell you about the important role of the bees to ensure pollination and how the apples grow. Questions are always welcome. We discuss harvesting techniques, cleaning and the pressing procedure on our big old belt press. We tell you about the natural fermentation methods, before we take a peek into the Cider barn where the blending, filtering, taste testing and bottling happens. We finish in either the Tasting Room or the Cider Garden for a cidermaker led cider tasting of some of our delicious ciders. Overall I throughly enjoyed the tour and tasting experience and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about cider. Below is an overview of what we learnt on the day. If you fancy lunch after your Tour & Tasting With us I would highly recommend the Hare and Hounds pub in Waytown only a short way down the road from us with beautiful views of the local countryside in their large garden. The rain didn’t arrive for quite a few hours, so we enjoyed some time outside our tent, sipping cider as we listened to the bellows and rumbles in the distance. It was a very slow moving storm. I felt nervous for the night ahead of us, afraid that lightning might come crashing down towards us while we attempted to sleep. I actually made Simon sit in the car with me once the lightning finally arrived just before midnight. It was still not right above us, but I let anxiety get the better of me.

A trip to Abbotsbury (30 minutes), meanwhile, can combine a wander around the subtropical gardens, the swannery and the maze. Our first cider apple harvest, Oliver harvests apples by night and continues with Penny sculpting metal sculptures by day whilst she holds the fort. Took part in Dorset Art Weeks with Sculptures in the orchard for the first time whilst living in Spetisbury near Blandford Forum. Since then, and thanks to the wholehearted effort of all the family and friends, Dorset Nectar Cider has gone from strength to strength, winning many local and prestigious accolades year on year, crafting new cider blends and always trying something new. Dabinet Single Variety cider is first introduced. The poly tunnel is rebuild after being destroyed in a storm.After dinner we headed to the beach to admire the evening light. The clouds hovering above the horizon had turned a deep grey and the sunlight had become a concentrated glowing amber. We walked slowly over the dusty shingle. With every step, dust would rise into a glowing haze, as if in slow motion, as we made our way towards to ocean.
