About this deal

There are many types of single-malt whiskey, each with its own unique flavor profile. Some of the most popular types of single-malt whiskey include: There’s a determination to maintain the unique character of the Prince of Wales’ favourite single malt, both through the preservation of the distillery’s floor maltings (accounting for 20% of Laphroaig’s needs) and the careful approach to current plans to expand production. Single malt Scotch whiskies undergo blending because the “single” terminology refers to the single distillery, not the blend. Vatted or Blended Malt is probably the closest approximation of what “double malt” is intended to mean, though we can’t be sure. Many vatted malt scotch bottles only include two distilleries and these will be marked on the bottle. The country is a big consumer of whisky and it’s a major producer too – no fewer than seven of the top 10 global whisky brands, by volume, are Indian. You may not have heard of Officer’s Choice, Royal Stag or McDowell’s, but these Indo-Scotch blends do huge volumes on their home turf. (India also makes cheap molasses-based spirits, known locally as “whisky” – but we’ll turn a blind eye to those.)

Glenlivet: This brand is known for its light and fruity flavor profile, which includes hints of apple, pear, and vanilla. Crafted by expert distillers from start to finish, this Scotch sets itself apart from the rest. Balvenie focuses on using meticulous care and attention from a group of top distillers to produce some of the finest whisky on the market. The distillery has been producing top-quality whisky since 1962 and has built up a name for itself over time. Balvenie’s 12 Year Doublewood is known for being smooth and especially enjoyable with a cigar. Mix it into an old-fashioned to bring out the marmalade and orange peel notes for a perfect afternoon drink. Single malt should be aged for at least three years; the age statement that reflects on the bottle is the youngest liquor inside. With a rounded nose and the brand’s signature spiciness, expect sweetness and an explosion of flavor from the first sip. Blue Label is known for being a velvety whisky, so enjoy flavors like hazelnut, toasted oak, sandalwood, and tobacco while drinking it neat.

What is the best high-end Scotch?

Other vatted malts include more than two single malts. The age stated on the bottle is still the youngest whisky included in the blend. Compass Box makes a number of these that we will discuss below! Blended Palate: Burnt coffee beans, dark chocolate, dried fruit, smoky BBQ sauce, flamed orange zest, and caramel. Knappogue Castle 16 Year Old is an intriguing Irish whiskey with an ever-growing number of notes that seem to appear and disappear each time you sip it. This no-peat, triple-distilled malt whiskey comes aged in both bourbon and sherry barrels, ensuring a well-rounded, slightly sweet aroma and a creamy finish. It is widely produced in different locations, including Japan, Ireland, and Canada. It can be considered a single malt if it follows the requirement of using one type of grain and a lone distillery.

There is no good answer to this question, and that’s part of the reason scotch has been so successful and so popular. There seems to be a flavor and style for everyone! Gold Award at the International Spirits Challenge (2018), Gold Award at the World Whiskies Awards (2017) Bottling Details: Bottled at 90 proof after slow-dilution proof. Non chill-filtered & no color added Of course, if we want a condensed version, it’s much simpler. Scotch is whisky made from barley that is produced and matured in Scotland. Whisky is any liquor made from distilled grains. In Scotch, this grain must always be barley. And this barley must be grown, malted, distilled, then aged in oak for at least 3 years – all in Scotland. And that’s the basic definition of “scotch,” if the list above makes your head spin.

What is Scotch whisky?

While an alchemical process is responsible for transforming simple ingredients into liquid gold, many distilleries use their own unique methods. The allure of Scotch, after all, lies in its diversity. Generally, it’s a process of malt whisky distillation where barley, pure Scottish water, and yeast work together to create unique flavours. Additional factors – including the pot still's shape and maturation period – affect the final liquid, and most distilleries keep their exact processes close to their chests. What are the best Scotch whisky regions? Double malt is a blend of two single malts from two distilleries. The blending was pioneered in Scotland in the 1860s, and by mixing malt whiskies, they created lighter and sweeter whiskies. Singleton is a creation of the modern, 21st-century age of single malt – a determined effort by owner Diageo to create a brand vehicle to take on the might of Glenfiddich and The Glenlivet. Glenfiddich’s focus as a brand is on creating “the best dram in the valley,” so it’s easy to — rightly — assume that any bottle will be a crowd-pleaser. It’s also the world’s most awarded single malt, offering a range of bottles at a medium price point that’s easily accessible for all.

OK, history lesson over. We’re here with a more important task: to inform you that – despite what the old guard may say – blended Scotch whisky deserves as much recognition on the main stage as a single malt whisky. The world of whisky can sometimes be obscure to the uninitiated. Here are the most important terms you need to know when shopping for whisky. Other limited expressions include Balvenie Fifty, a series of batch releases under the Balvenie Tun 1509 banner, and peated single malt Balvenie Peat Week, which launched last year. 7: Monkey Shoulder They can also make it from two or more malts (malted and unmalted barley) since it does not have any restriction, unlike other grain whiskies. Age Statement A very intense dram that needs quite a bit of water. But you’ll note interesting flavors like coconut, boiled fruits, and a bit of grass and sherbert! What is Double Malt? This award-winning blended Scotch whisky combines some of Scotland’s best flavors. It’s an affordable bottle that works well when enjoyed alone or with a few drops of water. Or, bring out the citrus notes by mixing with soda water. When Bill Smith Grant began a serious push behind The Glenlivet in the US in the 1950s, annual sales stood at less than 700 cases; in 2017, they topped 1m cases for the fourth year running, with the US accounting for about 40% of that figure. Glenmorangie Signet, first released in 2008, is the first single malt whisky to use high roast chocolate malt barley with a blend of Glenmorangie’s rarest whiskies matured in bespoke casks. It’s so special that each year, for an entire week, the distillery stops every other activity and dedicates itself to producing the chocolate malt barley for the Signet. A light, fruit-forward spirit owes its character to some famously tall stills, married in more recent times to the enlightened cask maturation policy of Dr Bill Lumsden and the financial clout of its owner since 2004, French luxury goods monolith LVMH.
