About this deal

Perforated plastic drainage pipe (80mm) can now be bought from many garden centres and all builders merchants in 25 rolls. This type of pipe is easily laid in small trenches and surrounded by shingle (small stones) to allow water through but filter out silt. The pipe can be joined using a waterproof repair tape also available from builder’s merchants. Please note, this could be costly as you'd need to hire a mini excavator to sculpt the contours of your garden. Do seek professional advice in any instance. 6. Use bark chippings Residential drainage systems vary in cost depending on the type, materials, labor, permits, equipment required, volume of water that needs draining, and if the drainage work is combined with other landscaping projects. Note that, sometimes, especially after a heavy rain, accumulated surface water may also not drain as fast as usual. This, however, could mean that your soil simply needs to be aerated. Types of garden drainage systems You will need to dig out the top layer of the clay then replace it with sandy soil (usually called turfing soil or loam soil) which will allow water to freely flow through the surface.

A drain should be 8 to 24 inches deep and between 6 and 12 inches wide, depending on the extent of the drainage problem. Surface-pooling water requires a shallow trench, and protecting a foundation or basement requires drainage pipes 2' deep or more. A Soakaway must be at least 5 metres from any habitable building, by local authority regulations. The pipe flowing to them should be of at least 75mm diameter which is the minimum pipe size for any surface water drainage. 80mm is the recommended size. Allowing water to drain through a surface is the first part but for a garden drainage system to work it needs to go somewhere. The destination of the water needs to be able to handle the quantity which it frequently gets in moderate to bad rain. For smaller gardens a 400L capacity may be suitable. For low points which collect the whole neighbourhoods rain you will need a much larger solution. In addition a neighbour next door to us had his garden raised so that it appears since then that the water runs to ours and other neighbours’ gardens all of which are now much lower than his.

Unperforated Land Drainage Pipe

Sloped lots rely on gravity to move the drainage to an exit point or storm drain. Otherwise, a sump pump is required to pump the water away from the foundation. The answer is to create an easy path for the water in the ground to flow so that the surface water can drain away. There are a number of common methods used to improve drainage, here is a brief overview of them from least effective (but cheapest) to most effective (but most expensive). Next dig out the run. This is best done with a trenching spade (these can be obtained from your local builders’ merchant). The depth should start at about 400 mm and slope in the direction of the intended flow of water, ideally at 6 mm fall per metre of trench. To test the fall, run some water from a hosepipe to the higher end of the trench and see if that water flows smoothly down the trench. The garden is lower than neighbouring gardens or at the bottom of a hill. Water flows downwards and Redirects heavy rain, stormwater, groundwater, and surface water to sewers, dry wells, and rain gardens. An exterior footing drain requires excavating 4 to 6+ feet down to the footings and exposing the foundation walls. A waterproofing coating or membrane is applied to the foundation walls. Then, an exterior French drain with perforated PVC pipe is installed next to the foundation footing, and the excavation is filled with drainage gravel. Often there’s no easy way to shed excess water. In this case, it is sometimes worth replacing the lawn with a new one –strip off the old turf, dig over the area, incorporating plenty of organic matter to improve drainage, then rake and level. Cover with a 5cm (2in) layer of sharp sand, then either sow lawn seedor lay turf on top. A cheaper method of achieving land drainage which is, historically, used to remove surface water from the perimeter of a house or patio, is a French Drain.

Performing a similar function to french drains, surface drainage channels catch water running off a surface and divert it to a collection or disposal point. They function much the same as the big rusty metal grids at the side of the road, catching water and redirecting it underground.Sure, your house may have a guttering system in place, but does your shed or greenhouse have one? The good news is that installing guttering on outbuildings is a relatively simple task. Once the gutters are affixed, redirect the downpipes to overflow barrels. This way, not only will you avoid flooding your garden, but also have an extra water supply to use during dryer months! Cultivate a grassy swale As with all home improvement projects, there are a number of factors that can affect the total price you pay for installing a drainage system in your garden. The best garden drainage solutions usually consist of a french drain system leading into a pump station which redirects water into a surface drain. Cheaper but less effective methods include soakaway areas, soil aeration and changing the soil composition. The ideal garden drainage solution depends on how bad the issue is, what can fit in your garden and the budget. It’s a good idea to understand why your garden is prone to flooding and waterlogging before diving into potential solutions. Standard homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover damage from flooding. Most policies only cover water damage from internal sources and not exterior groundwater. How Deep Should a drainage system be? Unperforated land drain is used for distributing surface water, these pipes have no holes; they are used to redirect water to a watercourse such as a stream, river, water tank or soakaway. Land drain should only be used for surface water drainage, never for foul water. Where should I use land drainage?
