"New Victoria Line timetable increases frequency". International Railway Journal . Retrieved 14 July 2017. The tube closes overnight during the week, but since 2016, the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, and Victoria lines, as well as a short section of the London Overground have operated all night on Friday and Saturday nights. The first trains run from about 05:00 and the last trains until just after 01:00, with later starting times on Sunday mornings. [222] [223] The nightly closures are used for maintenance, [222] but some lines stay open on New Year's Eve [224] and run for longer hours during major public events such as the 2012 London Olympics. [225] Some lines are occasionally closed for scheduled engineering work at weekends. [226] In 2019, the Canary Wharf Group suggested the construction of a new rail line between Euston and Canary Wharf, to improve connections to the future High Speed 2 railway. [140]

Under TfL, London's public transport network became more unified, with existing suburban rail lines across London upgraded and rebranded as London Overground from 2007, with the former East London line became part of the Overground network in 2010. [96] [97] Many Overground stations interchange with Underground ones, and Overground lines were added onto the Tube map. A 24-hour Night Tube service on Friday and Saturday nights, due to start in September 2015 on the entire line, [46] was delayed because of strike action. [47] The service began in August 2016, with trains running at 10-minute intervals on the whole line. [48] Design [ edit ] Crossrail 2 – 2014 Consultation Analysis" (PDF). Crossrail 2. p.143. London Underground was strongly criticised for its attitude toward fires; staff were complacent because there had never been a fatal fire on the system, and had been given little or no training to deal with fires or evacuation. The report on the inquiry resulted in resignations of senior management in both London Underground and London Regional Transport and led to the introduction of new fire safety regulations. Wooden escalators were gradually replaced with metal escalators on the Underground.

Charles Pearson (1793–1862) suggested an underground railway in London in 1845 and from 1854 promoted a scheme that eventually became the Metropolitan Railway. [355] The publication of the report led to resignations of senior management of both London Underground and London Regional Transport (LRT), including Keith Bright, the chairman of LRT. [40] Wooden panelling was to be removed from escalators, heat detectors and sprinklers were to be fitted beneath escalators, and the radio communication system and station staff emergency training were to be improved.
