About this deal

The former of those, as the name suggests, measures ambient light levels and adjusts contrast algorithms to deliver a more 'comfortable' viewing experience in darker rooms. Film Detection, meanwhile, can switch automatically either to the UHD Alliance's ultra-accurate Filmmaker Mode when the appropriate content flag is detected (although no such content seemingly exists), or to Philips' own Home Cinema Mode, which has been concocted to deliver an image that's sort of a mid-point between Filmmaker Mode and the heavily saturated, high-contrast Vivid preset.

Some will accept these occasional flaws as a fair trade for what is otherwise excellent processing. For others, those flaws will be too distracting and, if so, the new Pure Cinema motion setting could be for you. This results in slightly smoother and sharper motion than is produced by simply turning the processing off entirely (the only option on last year’s sets) with none of the shimmer you get from the more aggressive processing options. It's still not perfect, though, and the long and the short of it is that some rivals, particularly Sony and Panasonic, still offer better overall motion processing. From a games perspective the 9206 gets VRR, ALLM and AMD’s FreeSync Pro. The 50W 2.1 sound system matches the 9506 Mini LED with its rear mounted woofer and patented triple ring technology for enhanced bass. This is the first TV in the range that isn’t CalMAN ready for anyone interested in picture calibration up to a professional standard. Upscaling is well handled on the PUS8506, and HD content watched on Sky is sharp and largely clear of noise. You might spot some creeping in on streamed content, but it’s minimal and doesn’t distract from an otherwise accomplished picture that shares the same qualities as its 4K performance – superb colour handling, excellent detail levels and impactful contrast. Sitting below ‘The One’ is the 7906. The AmbiSleep/Sunrise feature where the TV can emit a warm glow and sounds in the morning/night is left out. The picture processor drops to the Pixel Plus Ultra HD, and motion interpolation is only available on the 70- and 75-inch models. But make the right adjustments and the endpoint is a lovely picture. Sharpness and detail remain two of the set's greatest strengths, but its colour balance is also delightfully well-judged. We suspect that the tone is just a little richer than is truly neutral, but the resulting picture is so pleasant that we could hardly call that a flaw. Let’s cut to the chase – the PUS8605 offers a great picture for the money. This is a midrange set, so it isn’t going to bother the likes of the OLEDs and flagship LCDs, nor is it aiming to. Its focus is creating an enjoyable picture that’s going to appeal to the majority of TV buyers. That means sharp outlines, punchy colours and good contrast are top of the bill, to create as striking a picture as possible for the price. SD content doesn’t fair quite so well, and is noticeably softer with more noise and some visible banding. We’re happy to see the PUS8605 has a solid grip on motion though, and everything from fight scenes to fast camera pans are smooth and judder-free.

The Philips’ unique selling point in a crowded TV market, however, is Ambilight, and the 805 has a three-sided implementation. Technically speaking, it’s an integrated bias lighting system that, besides adding to the overall immersion, can reduce eye fatigue for long sessions in front of the screen – especially so in darkened rooms. For gamers, there is VRR support on HDMI1 and HDMI2 for smooth gameplay, and the TV automatically switches to the low latency gaming setting when you switch to your console’s HDMI input.
