About this deal

In my case, it's already faster than the old Mac mini I have been using as a NAS for years, which has only USB 2.0 ports, limiting my file copies over the network to ~35 MB/sec! If you want your system to have a clean look, it may behoove you to get an enclosure that not just fits your Pi, but your drives as well. This will also help to organize the mess of wires and cables this project will create. Jan 6 13:41:29 CL01-Master kernel: [ 65.987624] cfg80211: Loading compiled-in X.509 certificates for regulatory database Simple and easy-to-use out-of-the-box solution, no need for expert-level knowledge of computer networking and storage systems While primarily designed for home environments or small home offices, OMV's use is not limited to those scenarios. The system is built on a modular design. It can be easily extended with available plugins right after the installation of the base system. OMV is the NAS server system software we are looking for.

At this point, we added the USB-C power and pressed the front button to start the system, we could see the PWM fan started to spin. It was also observed that the fan spin rate was not constant, which demonstrated that the temperature controller PWM fan was working properly. There are special operating systems like Openmediavault that turn your Pi into a NAS, but for a beginner setup, I actually recommend regular old Raspbian—it's flexible, easy to use, and good enough for sharing a few files over the network. Start by installing Raspbian with the recommended software as described in our beginner's guide. This completes our Raspberry Pi home NAS project. Now we can move our NAS to a more permanent location to provide network file and streaming services for the whole family. Find the external drive you want to use for your files—in my case, it's an 80GB drive called "MyExternalDrive"—and note its path. In the screenshot above, the 80GB drive plugged into my Pi corresponds to /dev/sda. (Make absolutely sure you note the correct drive, as we're about to erase it!) It looks like NFS holds the crown on the Pi, though if you use Windows or Android/iOS primarily, you might see slightly different results or have a harder time getting NFS going than Samba. Conclusion

But in the end, we don't see any improvements in the current situation of the global electronic components supply chain. So far, there's no telling when we might be able to offer you the board at an acceptable price. It's not your only option for sharing files, but Samba is easy to set up and compatible with just about any system you might have on the network, so it's what I recommend. Raspbian doesn't come with Samba installed by default, so you need to make sure your repositories are up to date and install it with the following commands: When it comes to performance figures there are some limiting factors to consider. First, both units are 4-bay enclosures essentially limiting you to a number of practical redundancy options. Units are powerful enough to serve as network storage but 4-bay solutions may seem not enough when your redundancy requires the sacrifice of one or two drives ( RAID10) and halving your capacity in the progress. The log shows a question is asked about the Plex media server list (plexmediaserver.list), just choose the default N. When we see "Installation successful", we know that the installation was successful. At this point, the Plex streaming service is up and running. Invoking the Nmap scan again from the macOS side, we find that TCP port 32400 for Plex service is open. 1 Your final price will always depend on where will you source the components, but I run the ballpark figures at the time of the writing and in both cases, you are looking at a very similar cost for both devices.

For each of the drives that were recognized, if you want to use it in a RAID array (which I do), you should add a partition. Technically it's not required to partition before creating the array... but there are a couple small reasons it seems safer that way. I’m writing this at an interesting time. NAS boxes, like the ones offered by Synology, finally caught up with times and offer interesting options to non-enterprise consumers, without charging an arm and a leg for their devices. At the same time component shortages seriously impacted the pricing and availability of Raspberry Pi 4 boards which are expensive and hard to find. In the meantime, we have fully dedicated ourselves to another project and further expanded the P2P network developed for the board. We will now continue to pursue this with full force and extend it with further functionalities to a full open-source alternative for traditional VPN.
