About this deal

There are three basic types of primers: oil-based, latex and pigmented shellac primer. Each has its strengths and weaknesses and works best on certain surfaces and in particular circumstances. Oil-based Primer Zinsser BIN Primer Sealer seals surface pores so you use less finish paint. Finish coat has rich uniform appearance, with no "high" and "low" spots. Finish resists dirt better and has better scrubbability. When we customized the existing bathroom vanity in my kid’s bath, we added a panel to the side of the vanity and used a raw sheet of MDF for that. We also built some basic flat-front drawers out of raw MDF. I needed to paint it the same colour as the rest of the cabinet doors (Benjamin Moore Mink Violet). To prepare those surfaces for paint, I also use Shellac or oil-based primer.

An important note:if you’re painting over a paintable silicone caulk, you should use an oil based paint for this project.Oil based paints will adhere better than latex paint or acrylic paint. Grab a quality paint brush and the perfect paint to match the caulk to your walls. Head to your local paint shop if you need help with color matching.

So simple, anyone can mix it

Once you have your paintable caulk and caulking gun, consider removing all the old silicone caulk before applying a fresh sealant. This will allow for the strongest, most long-lasting seal. These primers are water-soluble and so are easy to clean. They also come in low- or no-VOC formulas, making them a healthier alternative to oil-based and shellac primers. Shellac Primer A caulk remover or putty knife is enough to remove all old silicone caulk. In Fact, it’s the easiest way to do it. If you don’t want to spread the primer around, wrap them using painter’s tape. Also, use hand gloves to save your hand from primer and paint. Time to Dry Silicone caulking is a useful product to use by homeowners and carpenters to repair small and big holes in objects. Caulk is an excellent product to seal gaps, but painting over the silicone caulk ensues a lot of trouble. So, getting the best result on how to paint over silicone caulking needs the best action.

This may seem like an ad for BIN shellac-based primer but I promise you it’s not, I just really love the stuff and I use it for almost everything! I always have a can of it in my stash! Top mistakes to avoid when priming or painting your cabinets: In step three, you’ll be applying caulk either to the empty joint, or on top of the previous caulk. This method involves applying a priming shellac spray over the silicone caulk before you go in with your paint brush. For maximum protection from the natural inhibitors, the Rustins manufacturers ensured that this product has excellent sealing properties. Thus, it also works best as a wood sealer, which sands easily. Besides, it has a low odor, thereby not harmful to your respiratory system. What’s more is that you will complete most of your work on time, as this primer covers approximately 12mLet’s see what you need to do to paint over silicone caulking. True Method For Painting Over Silicone Caulk Use of Shellac Spray Primer Painting cabinets is not hard but it is a LOT. There is a lot to paint, and a lot of steps, and if you are going through the trouble of painting cabinets you want to make sure you do it right the first time. If you want to avoid the hassle of getting an oil based paint and adding primer, just buy a latex paintable caulk like Sashco Lexel.

I mentioned that this primer is not low VOC and so some safety precautions should be taken when using. Use outside if possible or in a well-ventilated area. The technical data also suggests that you use a respirator when applying. Doors, drawer fronts and all hardware should also be removed before priming. If you are going to fill any holes from hardware, or patch any dings or scrapes, that should also be done prior to priming and then sanded smooth. Spraying versus rolling All it takes is applying a shellac spray, or some fresh paintable caulk, and you’ll be good to go. I hope you feel confident in accomplishing this project yourself, because I totally believe in you. But just to ensure it’s fully cured, I’d recommend waiting 30 to 45 minutes before starting to paint. Step 3: Apply paint over the dried primer spray. Use synthetic brushes, such as polyester or nylon, with latex primer. Natural bristle brushes work best if you're using oil-based primers. It’s also highly recommended for spot priming and sealing knots on exterior wood. Here’s an example of how I used Coo-Var’s Shellac Primer to treat failed knots on the exterior of a front door: You’ll need a putty knife or a silicone caulk remover to remove the old caulk layer. Adding more denatured alcohol to the non paintable silicone caulk can also help break the bonds. Otherwise, it’s perfect for use on any internal surface you consider to be a problem area and will give the next coat in your paint system a fantastic binding medium on which to adhere to. Start out by getting your hands on a paintable caulk. You’ll also need a caulking gun for this project.

Dirt and debris between your primer coat and your surface will prevent a proper bond, so make sure you clean really thoroughly before you start priming. Primers and paints can give off fumes that can be hazardous if exposed to them for extended durations. Be sure your workspace is well ventilated. Open windows and/or use fans to circulate the air or draw it outside.
