About this deal

Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien · J.R.R. Tolkien: Life and Legend · J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator · Available for the first time in one volume, this is the definitive collection of Tolkien’s five acclaimed modern classic ‘fairie’ tales in the vein of The Hobbit, fully corrected and reset for this edition.

When Smith was a young boy, his father surprised everyone by announcing he was going on vacation. To where, no one knew. But, when he returned, he brought with him Apprentice. Three years later, seven years before the next 24 feast, he announced, to the villages dismay, that he would be retiring and Apprentice would be making the Grand Cake. Tolkien, himself a philologist, sprinkled several philological jokes into the tale, including a variety of ingeniously fake etymologies. Almost all the place-names are supposed to occur relatively close to Oxford, along the Thames, or along the route to London. Smith of Wooton Major: a short story about the intersection of our world and that of Faerie. It's a light-hearted read, but this is for adults who like fantasy stories, not for kids. I think children may enjoy the story just fine, but they wouldn't really "get it." FARMER GILES OF HAM is a good opener and a story I find impossible to criticise. It's about a farmer who becomes an accidental hero and who is then required to fight a dragon. Tolkien displays a surprising talent for gentle humour here and the story works perfectly as a comedy of errors. I've found few authors who can take you into a magical, childhood world with seemingly effortless ease, but Tolkien is such an author.

Farmer Giles of Ham is fat and unheroic, but – having unwittingly managed to scare off a short-sighted giant – is called upon to do battle when a dragon comes to town;My favorite thing about this little tale is that you can still see the grand scope in which Tolkien writes. His mine clearly always saw the big picture, and what could be, rather than just weaving a little something-something…even for his 4 year old son. Similar to The Lord of the Rings it is set in Britain in an imaginary period of the Dark Ages featuring mythological creatures, and thus providing an alternative prehistory to the world we live in today. And I have to say that the villagers in this tale really reminded me of the hobbits, and even Chrysophylax can be seen as a parody of Tolkien's smaug. It was just a delightful read. 'I hope you are taking some stout rope with you?' he said. En esta sección nos encontramos distintas poesías que escribió Tolkien. Algunas fueron sacadas/inspiradas en el mundo de LOTR. The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún · The Fall of Arthur · The Story of Kullervo · The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun John Ronald Reuel Tolkien: writer, artist, scholar, linguist. Known to millions around the world as the author of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien spent most of his life teaching at the University of Oxford where he was a distinguished academic in the fields of Old and Middle English and Old Norse. His creativity, confined to his spare time, found its outlet in fantasy works, stories for children, poetry, illustration and invented languages and alphabets.
