About this deal

Much more problematic is the inconsistent focus accuracy I'm experiencing from the Tamron 70-300 VC. Announcing the development of a full size premium telephoto zoom – the Tamron Superior Performance SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD (Model A005) for Nikon mount. With a full-frame digital or 35mm SLR, portrait and medium telephoto shots can be achieved on the wider 70mm end of the range and spectacular telephoto shots at the longer 300mm side. When using an APS-C sensor camera, the angle of view changes, giving it the equivalent range of 109-465mm for bold ultra-telephoto shots. And with a maximum magnification ratio 1:4, the lens can be used to explore in the realm of semi-macro photography. This lens is very well built and has a metal mount. On the lens there are two on/off switches: for autofocus and for image stabilization. The focus ring is two cm wide and covered with rubber. That feels good. The zoom ring is wider and covered with the same kind of rubber. What you encounter less and less today is a window on a lens in which you can see the distance that is in focus. With telephoto lenses, it can be really convenient. This is an lens that uses internal focusing (IF). The front lens therefore doesn’t turn during focusing. This is useful when using a gradient filter or a polarizing filter. Vignetting Our image stabilization test is almost finished for this lens, which advertises four stops of improvement. It doesn't seem fair to match the new Tamron against Canon's latest L-glass, so we'll match it against this perennial favorite. This is a lens where Canon got it right - it meets and exceeds the sharpness performance of the Tamron, shows less CA, and less corner shading as well. Distortion is a bit more noticeable on the Canon; both lenses feature USM style focusing and image stabilization. The lens is equipped with ultrasonic autofocus drive USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive). It achieves faster focusing making this telephoto lens perfect for photography of sports, vehicles, and other fast-moving subjects. With advanced motor technology and software, Tamron's USD delivers precise and noiseless focusing at turbo speed.

Full frame sensor format DSLR users should expect to see between 1.5 and just over 2 stops of vignetting in the corners.Note: (if you don’t want to read my whole review, just scroll down to the bottom for the score and pros and cons) Sony mount is not equipped with the VC image stabilization mechanism, as anti-shake functionality is included in the body of Sony digital SLR cameras. Consequently, the name of the Sony mounted lens, SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di USD, does not include the VC description.

While this new lens is designed for digital SLR cameras, it can be used with both full-frame sensor and AF 35mm cameras with a zoom range of 70-300mm; or with APS-C sensor cameras where the angle of view will change the zoom range equal to 109-465mm *4. The nine-blade diaphragm stops down to f/32-45 as you go through the zoom range, whereas the largest available apertures range from f/4-5.6 After both "real world" and resolution target testing, on both APS-C and full frame sensors and looking at several hundred images I came to the following conclusions: Ma è normale che sia così: non per niente infatti costa quasi due terzi in meno, per esempio, di obiettivi professionali tout court come il Canon EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6L IS USM! Both lenses show similar levels of vignetting wide open. I'd estimate the Tamron vignetting at about 1 stop of underexposure in the corers, wide open on a full frame sensor, across the whole zoom range.I have had quite some lenses. With my canon 550d and 5d mark III i had the 50mm prime, the 70-300 IS, the 70-300 IS L, the 70-200 4.0 L and the 70-200 2.8 II (twice). Now i switched to Nikon and i have the 35mm prime and the 18-105 kit lens. Overall: I really do love this lens, for the price it is almost unbeatable. The build is very good, no problems with that. It is solid and feels good in the hands, the zoom is a bit stiff and there is no focus limiter, but these are minor points. The focusing system is good, and does a good job speed wise. And the image quality is truly great until 200mm and a little stopped down, only degrading in the 300mm range to an ok level. In the end I can only end this review with high praise, and highly recommend it for anyone that wants to get a lens in this range, but doesn’t want to pay more for the main brands. I give this lens a solid 4/5 considering price point and performance, it is just as good as the main brands for half the price. With their deeper DOF (Depth of Field) with identical framing, APS-C camera bodies will not show the focus errors as readily as full frame bodies. Image stabilization is always difficult to test in any quantitative fashion. To look at these two lenses I tried several techniques but basically it boils down to taking lots and lots of shots at various shutter speeds with each lens and then looking at all the images and coming up with some sort of statistical assessment of sharpness.

Tamron’s USD works with the high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations that are produced by a ring called a ‘stator’. Energy from the vibrations is used to rotate an attached metallic ring known as the ‘rotor’. Piezoelectric ceramic, an element that produces ultrasonic vibrations when voltage of a specific frequency is applied, is arranged in a ring formation on the stator. This electrode configuration of piezoelectric ceramic causes two ultrasonic vibrations to occur in the stator. Combining a somewhat slow AF speed with a relatively narrow aperture means that this lens is not the best choice for sports photography.

The Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens is available in Canon (reviewed), Nikon and Sony/Minolta mounts. We spent 2 hours in the store making detailed comparisons using my MacBook (with 2 other guys in the shop offering very valued, experienced but un-biased opinion) including making crops of each image. On all settings, the Tamron edged out the Canon 70-300 fairly easily, and the Canon was excellent to start with! Against the 70-200 F4L, the Tamron loses slightly when wide open, but once stopped down to F5.6/8 the differences were extremely hard to find, with the Tamron only losing marginally at the corners. In several of the images I took, we really couldn't tell any difference between the Tamron and the Canon L - it even came to the point that we couldn't remember which images were from which lens, they were that close.
