About this deal

Siobhan McCann, head of campaigns at Drinkaware, which is funded by the alcohol industry, said: "There is a variety of alcoholic drinks on the market so it's important consumers are able to make educated and informed choices about the drinks they choose." He said: "Living here I actually forgot about the existence of the Tennent's Super, because in Italy I drank it so much that I didn't really remember much of my teenage years. The charity said that the easy availability of extra strength brews is the main cause of alcohol-related problems for 800 of the homeless people that it is currently supporting. At least six of these people die each year from alcohol problems, it said. There's four people in this hostel we're sitting in who are about to die and it's directly because of super strength lager". I would have thought that any self-respecting drinks company would want nothing to do with these drinks," says Jeremy Swain.

Tennent’s lager is 4% abv. Which is quite low for a lager, to be honest, their Tennent’s Light Lager is even lower at 3.5% abv. On the other end of the scale is Tennent’s Super which is 8% (though as I mentioned earlier it is now brewed in Luton). Is Tennent’s Lager Gluten-Free? The social side effects of super strength are of such concern to Westminster and Ealing Councils that they have persuaded large supermarkets to remove these drinks from their shelves. The series, which ran from 1969 to 1991 was inspired by the American brewers of the time, originally the brewer used scenic pictures from around Scotland but the success of the 'Lager Lovelies' as almost an accident after they started using pictures of model Ann Johanson on the cans alongside the landscape pictures. The Government's intention of introducing a 40p minimum price per unit of alcohol may encounter opposition in Brussels from countries with brewers exporting to Britain. Moderately active - Do light to moderate intensity exercise 3-4 times a week. E.g. going to the gym / swimming / cycling / horse riding / dance classes / playing golf. Daily dog walking (brisk pace, twice a day).Others are less reticent. At Thames Reach, Jeremy Swain said: "It's ludicrous to have a can of super-strength lager with 4.5 units when the Government is saying that men should drink no more than four units a day."

It is noted in the Glasgow city records that in 1745, after suffering military defeat in England, Bonnie Prince Charlie and his army stopped at the Wellpark Brewery, where every man was “refreshed and heartened” by the Tennent’s brew, after their long march from the Highlands. 3. Tennent’s Lager was introduced to Scotland by 21 year old Hugh Tennent A mural on Wellpark's walls, dedicated to Tennent's Lager creator Hugh Tennent. Picture: Tennent'sThe figures may explain why AB InBev and Carlsberg, respectively the biggest and fourth-biggest brewers in the world, continue to make them. Some folk used to say: ‘Aren’t you being exploited?’ But compared to the Miss UK contest I entered, which was a real cattle-market, Tennent’s really looked after me. I was flown around in the company plane and paid vulgar amounts of money to have a fantastic time." In the Commons an Early Day Motion tabled by Battersea MP Martin Linton is calling on the Government to curb the sale of super strength lagers by taxing them at a higher rate. In April 2008 InBev UK announced that after careful consideration they would no longer be producing Tennent's Super in 500ml cans - and they will be moving to 440ml in the first quarter of 2008. The Panel then considered the interaction of the statements ‘Tennent’s Super’ and ‘Strong Lager’ and whether these sought to place undue emphasis, or glamorise, the product strength. After much discussion, the Panel concluded that ‘Tennent’s Super’ would be regarded as the brand name and ‘strong lager’ as the product descriptor. The Panel therefore concluded that the words did not place undue emphasis or seek to glamorise the product strength and that the product was not in breach of Code paragraph 3.2(a).

Confession time. I have never drunk Tennent’s lager! This is something that I want to put right at some time, but to so far I haven’t ever seen it on tap in England. I’ve seen Tennent’s Super in corner shops, but that (perhaps understandably) has a bad reputation here. Budvar, Staropramen, Pravha, Kozel, and Pilsner Urquell are all excellent Czech pilsners, and you can see their influence on Tennent’s. The Tennent’s brewery offers tank lager, which is very similar to the pilsner tanks that you can find in Czech bars (and some English pubs that sell Staropramen). Lobbyists say super strength drinks contribute to premature deaths and the phenomenon of 'young-olds' where people exhibit the health problems of people 20-30 years older than their biological age. The company produces Tennent's Lager, Scotland's market leading brand of pale lager since it was first produced at the Wellpark Brewery in 1885.

6. Rare Tennent's Lager cans featuring Lager Lovelies are now a collector's item

The lager is described prominently on the front of the can as ‘Strong Lager’ and the 9.0% alc vol (which is stronger than a typical lager) is displayed prominently in a large type. Both of these emphasise the alcoholic strength rather than providing factual information about the higher alcoholic content. Complainant One half-litre can of the drink, dubbed Vitamin T, contains four-and-a-half units of alcohol - more than the recommended daily maximum for either a man or a woman. Inactive - Do very little exercise, going for the occasional walk (moderate pace, low intensity). Spend majority of leisure time doing activities such as watching TV, playing computer games, on the internet, reading, cooking, driving, general household chores. Crag_1975 added: "I was in Rome last year and Tennents Super is considered a Premium beer. Fancy restaurants with Super proudly displayed on shelves."

Mr Swain added: "We need support and help from the breweries and government to end the easy availability of 9% lagers, and to accept that the cost of cheap, super strength is, in human terms, simply too high." J. & R. Tennent was acquired by Charrington United Breweries in 1963, and in 1966 formally merged with United Caledonian Breweries, Charrington's other Scottish subsidiary, to form Tennent Caledonian Breweries. The new company's brewing was concentrated at the Wellpark Brewery and the Heriot Brewery in Edinburgh. Wellpark was redeveloped between 1965 and 1968, but Heriot was demolished in the 1990s. [5] In 1967, Charringtons merged with Bass to form the Bass Charrington Group. It was later bought by the Belgian brewer Interbrew (now InBev) in June 2000, which became part of Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2008. It says, "Tennent's Super is brewed to be enjoyed in moderation. It is the individuals responsibility to monitor the number of units of alcohol that they drink."
