About this deal

Tom and Catherine, a musical about the couple's life, was written by local playwright Tom Kelly. It played to sell-out crowds at the Customs House in South Shields. Agnes Conway (Claire Skinner) is an independent young lady who works in her father's sweet shop. She's shielding her sister Jessie (Michelle Charles), who is having a secret romance with someone of a lower class, while herself engaging in an intrigue with the impossibly handsome Charles Farrier (Edward Atterton), the second son of a moneyed military family.

Double-thrilled are his parents, who just love knowing their son is going to be marrying the daughter of Batshit Conway of Shoot-’em-Up Lane. In June 1940, at the age of 34, she married Tom Cookson, a teacher at Hastings Grammar School. After experiencing four miscarriages [8] late in pregnancy, it was discovered she was suffering from a rare vascular disease, [4] telangiectasia, which caused bleeding from the nose, fingers and stomach and resulted in anaemia. A mental breakdown followed the miscarriages, from which it took her a decade to recover. [6] Writing career [ edit ] Duncan: Reg, you’re my beloved brother, and Agnes, you’re my beloved wife. Side note: Agnes is one of my favorite Cookson heroines, because she’s smart as a whip and, unlike many other Cookson heroines, keeps a level head in all situations, and does not take any shit about anything, ever, including her awful, awful dad.But you know who’s stalking her hanging around in the same location being super-sweet and completely dismissing deeply-ingrained ideas of class? Duncan Idaho the human golden retriever is who! He literally jumps out of a boat to see her. I can’t even.

You know who will be totally equally pissed about this for completely the same reasons and not at all have serious conflicts of interest about the whole thing? But she could not have foreseen how significant a part he is to play in her destiny... Cookson wrote almost 100 books, which sold more than 123 million copies, her novels being translated into at least 20 languages. She also wrote books under the pseudonyms Catherine Marchant [10] and a name derived from her childhood name, Katie McMullen. [11] She remained the most borrowed author from public libraries in the UK for 17 years, [12] up until four years after her death, losing the top spot to Jacqueline Wilson only in 2002.
