About this deal

I know there are a lot of different takes on this book, but to me the characters of Graham, Grout and Quiss seem to represent different periods of time in a person's life, and with them the key themes of love, employment and age which, when the odds are against them, leave the respective characters feeling broken, and out of touch with reality.

The most interesting part for me was the Castle were Quiss and Ajayi are imprisoned, a wonderful and intriguing place. For sure I’m going into the kind of detail that some reviewers might find over-the-top, but there is a point. For me, anything that causes me to do a double-take when I’m reading a story breaks the magic – that magic where narrative, dialogue, characters and effective description carry you away to fictive dreamland. I’m afraid that break happened once too often with Walking On Glass and I just couldn’t get into it. This is all conjecture, of course. The ending is really very enigmatic, and the novel could probably bear several different interpretations. Bit like ‘The Trial’ in that respect, though hardly worthy of the same effort. Banks is really just playing postmodern puzzle games. The ending of the book is open to interpretation (I came up with three so far) but I'm not sure if that was Banks intent... Graham Park is a young man in love with Sarah ffinch, a mysterious, aloof woman he meets at a party. As he walks to meet her at her flat the story charts how Park met Sarah. And studies his growing, yet doomed, expectation. In 1980s, UK, art student Graham is introduced to the enigmatic Sara ffitch by his eccentric best friend, Slater. He instantly falls for her, hard, and moons after her with such a mad crush that the reader can just tell that it's probably unrequited and not all will turn out well.... especially since Sara's rumored to be seeing a tough biker dude...

Eventually, links between the three storylines become apparent. Literary significance and criticism Why is the big castle so big and enigmatic (LIKE THE WOMAN oh the parallels THE ENIGMA). The little servants squeak and scuttle, they are very adorable. HE IS TORTURING THEM HE IS TORTURING THEM HE IS--they play chess for two hundred days, the absurdity, the meaninglessness, the pain.

Walk on Glass Floors

Glasswalking is for those who really dare to take on a challenge, so is great for charities raising money, but is also good for corporate and schools, for focus and goal training.

A man on his way to meet his lover, a man who believes himself to be a Warrior exiled to a mundane world, and two adversaries playing tabletop games in a surreal castle - all tied together in a complex literary novel. The fuccboi is presented in a sympathetic light because the poor, poor man just wants to enter the enigmatic WOMAN's apartment, for, oh, who knows, an innocent dialogue. He is constantly denied this, adding to the enigma of THE WOMAN (who seems to have no personality except to DENY HIS DESIRE). Something something Lacan, heteronormativity, white bread. Walk on Glass is made with either a sandblasted or patterned ceramic top surface which provides a non-slip surface, even when the glass is wet. Glass floors without this will always be unsafe to walk on as you can easily slip just like if you have a wet tiled floor in your bathroom or kitchen. Is Glass Flooring always Clear? Three apparently unrelated stories alternate here – two realistic (or apparently so), one highly fantastical. The last is by far the most compelling, amply demonstrating the extraordinary power of Banks’ imagination and inventiveness. As the book progresses, it also starts shedding light on the other two.Still, it's not a happy ever after book - on the contrary can be very depressing in parts - and it's not a story with a definite conclusion, which has left many people frustrated, despite the blurb's promise for these characters' inevitable collision (which in retrospect is rather vague).

Overall, I think ‘Walking on Glass’ is just a bit too clever for its own good, and the author wasn't entirely happy with it either. His next effort, ‘The Bridge’ - a brilliant novel which is probably his masterpiece - reworks many of these ideas to much better overall effect. The story of Graham’s unhappy pursuit of the elusive Sara ffitch is also reasonably absorbing, though the cruel twist at the end seems very contrived. But wait! - is it meant to seem contrived because it has been? Glass floor panels are built by laminating two to three pieces of tempered glass together and they are then placed into a specifically manufactured supporting structure around the joins. Most experts would say that glass flooring can have 2 times the strength and support of a wooden floor. Can Walk on Glass be used Outside?

Toughened Laminated Walk On Glass

People often fear the glass over our other events, yet this is done with children as well as adults, and is Kirsty’s favourite thing to do most weeks alongside her mindfulness.
