Brush your primer on in the direction of the wood grain. If your piece is laminate and doesn’t have a true wood grain, brush lengthwise. The most important rule for this entire project is to brush in the direction of the grain. The sapwood, by comparison, is a lighter shade of brown with more creamy hues. The sapwood is inferior compared with the heartwood, but it still has its uses in furniture making.
