About this deal

Consistent with the recent trend in young adult literature that represents adults as either helpless or helplessly corrupt, Christiane describes a family and a community that are incapable of helping those who are young and addicted. This indictment extends to the structures of the German educational system and the private capital interests that shaped her corner of Berlin. Down to the signs posted about the housing project that all but forbid children from playing, her environment fails her. But Christiane’s sense of general disappointment is well tempered by her sense of personal responsibility. What bothers me most of all is this Christiane F. thing. Is she finally clean now, or not? As if there is nothing else to say about me. And I can't get clean. It's just what everyone else has always expected of me. The doctors complain. But I do have a life, after all. This book is a literal masterpiece. I watched the movie ‘Christiane F.’ Which heavily influenced me to read the book to understand her story on a deeper level. The movie genuinely did not do this book justice. Don’t get me wrong; the movie is FANTASTIC, but there were so many things that were stated in the book that were never brought up in the film. I can honestly say that the book was a million times better than the film. You see so much more depth between the mother and Christiane in the book rather than the film. In the film, when the mother finds out about her heroin addiction; she is never shown or really spoken of again. Yet in the book, the mother tries over and over to help her daughter.

Neue Zürcher Zeitung (in German). 29 November 2013. That was exactly what she was trying to do; try and find a place where she felt accepted and belonged. She lived with her son (born 1996) [13] in Teltow, Germany, but, in 2008 after they both relocated to Amsterdam, Felscherinow temporarily lost custody of her son in August 2008, after authorities intervened in Berlin. [14] In late January 2011, Felscherinow was searched during a drug raid in Moritzplatz, a Berlin subway station then known for its drug market; however, the search did not reveal any drugs.

I hope that My Second Life scares people away from taking drugs more than my first book. I'm quite sure it will. It describes how much pain I've had in my life, and [explains] that I will die a very early and painful death. [2] Atze’s death completely obliterated an impossible dream that we all shared: the dream of the cool junkie, who’s able to handle his heroin. Instead, everyone in Atze’s old crowd began to fear and mistrust each other. Before, when there weren’t enough needles to go around and we were shooting up, everybody wanted to be first. Now all of a sudden, everybody wanted to be second. Nobody talked about how scared they were, but everyone was worried that the stuff would be too pure, too strong, or that it would be cut with strychnine or some other poison. You could die from an overdose, but you could also die from shit that was too pure or too dirty. All the reasons why the book is special are also advantages of it. While “Zoo Station” is unquestionably a powerful memoir, it can be problematic for some readers due to its graphic description of drug use, prostitution and overall Christiane F’s experiences. Some people may find the content disturbing. It also can be triggering for individuals who have struggled with addiction or had a traumatic experience relating to drug abuse. After the initial success of the book and the film, Felscherinow found herself becoming something of a celebrity, both in Germany and other countries in Europe. A subculture of teenage girls in Germany began to emulate her style of dress and spent time around the Bahnhof Zoo, which became an unlikely tourist attraction. This development concerned drug experts in the youth field, who feared that, despite the film's bleakness and numerous drug-related scenes (particularly those portraying the reality of heroin withdrawal), vulnerable teens might regard Felscherinow as a cult hero and role model. What you find here has been done sitting at a desk, in a small town on the shores of a lake, forty years later after the publication of the book. Very far indeed, both in time and in space, from the facts and places narrated. In every quote, we highlight a keyword ( bold) to point out what its matched footnote is about. Diagrams and maps are interactive: mouse over or tap on touch screens. This is an open project. After shooting finished, a friend’s mother told me she would never have allowed her daughter to do the film. I didn’t understand why. I grew up with my father and he knew I was very strong-willed. If I wanted to do the film, I would find a way. So my father said: “If you really want to do it, do it.” We never thought the consequences would be so huge. But one night I came home, and since I was in a good mood and felt like things were going pretty well overall, I stopped in the living room to sit down with my mom—but right away she got up and went to get the paper without saying a word. I could sense what was coming next. She always handed me the paper like that when there was a report about a heroin death. I hated it. I didn’t want to read whatever she wanted to show me. Zoo Station is a book with a strong commitment to honesty—even if honesty is boring. Chasing Christiane as she repeatedly chases her fix, shoots up, recovers, and relapses is often discouraging to the point of boredom, but it treats the drug problem in the terms that Jürgen Quandt, the director of a local protestant youth outreach center, is happy to see Berliners embracing: “as it really exists, instead of how we’d like to imagine it.”
