About this deal

Plants growing in pots and containers, outdoors or under cover, are most likely to be severely damaged by vine weevil grubs. Plants growing in the open ground are less likely to be damaged, althoughheavy infestations ofgrubscanoccur on strawberries, Primula, polyanthus, Sedum ,Heuchera and young yew plants.

The female weevils lay their eggs in the compost or soil among host plants. As a rule, this happens in August and September, though a lot depends on the weather during the previous winter and spring. In a mild year, egg-laying could start in early summer. Each female is capable of laying 1000 or more eggs. These eggs are less than 1mm across, white at first, later turning brown. They are difficult to see and much smaller than the granules of controlled-release fertiliser found in container-grown plants, which are often mistaken for insect eggs. The white C-shaped larvae then emerge into the soil from June and start to eat the roots of the plant. They can feed until October. Affected plants will begin to wilt and eventually die, or they may appear to have stunted growth as a result of grubs damaging the roots, rendering them less efficient. Quite often, if the plant is lifted at this stage then the grubs can be seen in the soil and the damage to roots will be perfectly obvious. Yes, when Which? Gardening trialled controls we had most success with Scotts Bug Clear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer. It can only be used on pot-grown plants and can't be used on edible plants. What about biological controls for vine weevil? Weevils are a group of several families of beetles in thesuperfamily Curculionoidea, there are more than 500 species in the UK. All feed on plant material, mostly live plants but a few feed on dry seeds (grain weevils) or rotting wood. Most do not cause noticeable damage to garden plants and several species are uncommon.Vine weevil is classified in a subfamily of the known as the broad nosed weevils (Entiminae), so called because the of the broad snout (rostrum) these weevils have. There are over 100 species in this subfamily in Britain. More information on broad nosed weevils from UK Beetles. Vine weevils are a devastating plant pest. Suddenly otherwise healthy-looking plants wilt and collapse and no amount of watering will help them recover. The reason? Vine weevil grubs have eaten all the roots.

Sprays that promise prolonged protection after spraying are dangerous to bees and other beneficial insects. The following pesticides (from by the Pesticide Action Network) contain neonicotinoids that are harmful to bees:BugClear™ Ultra Vine Weevil Killer only has approval for use on ornamental and flowering plants growing in containers. It cannot be used on the soil in the garden or on edible crops. The only downside to nematodes is you have to store in the fridge before use, but that’s nothing too onerous.

Vine weevil is one plant insect pest that most gardeners live in fear of. And it is a pest to worry about. Suddenly, otherwise healthy-looking plants collapse and die thanks to the root-eating, soil-borne grubs.A trap containing nematodes ( Steinernema carpocapsae), isavailable for controlling adult vine weevil. The traps should be placed on the ground below plants damaged by the weevils during the summer. The adults enter the trap during the day and are infected by the nematodes Normal insecticide sprays don’t work on vine weevils in the soil, so a very strong pesticide type called a systemic neonicotinoid insecticide acetamiprid must be used. There are a range of options. The most direct is to keep an eye open for the adults and destroy any that you find. As the adult weevils tend to feed during the night, it's worth going out with a torch. Eggs start off white, but turn brown before they hatch, making them very difficult to spot in soil.

Use the measure provided to mix 60ml of BugClear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer with 1 litre of water in a watering can or mixing vessel. Dilute the concentrated liquid as recommended on the label and water it on to the compost in the containers. It works in the roots and the compost, where it will protect against vine weevil and other compost-dwelling insect plant pests for up to 2 months. There are now several methods of treatment available including the traditional pesticides but there are also some eco-friendly options too. Pesticides can now be considered the last resort, as they can harm the environment and also be dangerous if used in areas frequented by children or pets. So a safe, natural biological control method is one solution worth considering.Nemasys Vine Weevil Killeris both safe and highly effective in the control of vine weevil grubs. The treatment consists of natural nematodes, a tiny parasitic worm that feeds on the vine weevil larvae.

Symptoms

Pesticide control The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner. Nematodes work for six weeks, but give up to four months since they prevent the larvae from hatching into adults and causing another lifecycle.
