For example, if your dog weighs 30 pounds (13.61 kgs), divide 13.61 by 8 = 1.7 teaspoons for the low range of catnip. For the high range, divide 13.61 by 2 = 6.8 teaspoons. So, a 30 lbs dog would get between 1.7 and 6.8 teaspoons of catnip. Catnip Calculator for Dogs That said, you should never give anything to your pet that's not for them without consulting a vet first. You may be wondering why I have not mentioned over-the-counter (OTC) human medications, such as Kaopectate®, Pepto Bismol®, or Imodium®, for your pet. The reason being, depending on the cause of the diarrhea, these medications can do more harm than good. They should only be given if recommended by your dog’s veterinarian and only at the dose they advise.

Activated charcoal removes poisonous substances from the gastrointestinal tract that were orally ingested by the dog.

Why does my dog have diarrhoea?

Metronidazole is often used in combination with other antibiotics to improve its spectrum of activity, which is especially useful in cases where multiple bacterial species are identified.

Poisoning may result from misuse by pet owners, off-label use of medicines, or more frequently, accidental ingestion of drugs that are improperly stored. Probiotics are friendly bacteria for your dog’s gut that can be beneficial for some dogs, but not all. While there are some medications where the exact dose isn’t too important, it could destabilize the condition if your dog is on essential medicines for heart conditions, seizures, or other critical illnesses. Are there any dogs who shouldn’t have sucralfate? Your dog is a herding breed (Sheltie, Australian Shepherd, Collie, etc.). Many herding breed dogs carry a mutant form of the ABCB1 -1 Δ gene that significantly limits their ability to break down certain drugs. Don’t be tempted to give your dog anything rich or fatty until they have fully recovered - this is likely to make their diarrhoea much worse!Any medication or substance that is ingested by or injected into your dog has the potential to cause an allergic reaction or even anaphylaxis, but thankfully this is incredibly rare. Sucralfate is a very safe medication because it isn’t absorbed into your dog’s system from the intestine. However, it can occasionally cause constipation, vomiting, or diarrhea, and it may interfere with digestion (and therefore absorption of nutrients) if given excessively. It's one of the safer human meds for dogs out there, but studies show that continuous use makes it less effective with time. You should never try to figure out the dosage for your pet simply based on the label of a human medication.

Metronidazole works by destroying and preventing the creation of DNA in the infecting organisms. Unlike most other drugs, metronidazole is able to treat central nervous system infections by penetrating the blood-brain barrier. Sucralfate is a very safe medication because it isn’t absorbed into your dog’s system from the intestine. Is sucralfate safe to give with other medications? If your vet does recommend Buffered Aspirin for your pet, make sure that there are no added ingredients like acetaminophen, and follow your veterinarian’s dosing instructions to a tee.

Sudden change in food – a sudden change in food is likely to upset the stomach and cause soft stools/diarrhoea.

Early evidence suggests that sucralfate could affect your dog’s blood sugar, perhaps by reducing absorption. Therefore, if your dog is diabetic, sucralfate might not be the best choice of medication. Otherwise, unless your dog is allergic or has had a previous reaction to sucralfate, it should be safe to give. You will also notice that as per dosage warnings among the safe human meds for dogs below, we have NOT included any dosing information—this is done intentionally. But if you notice diarrhea, consult your veterinarian as this can be a side effect of ranitidine use.

What to feed a dog with diarrhoea

Other than the fact that dogs are dogs and not humans, it's also the size of your pet that matters when considering human meds for dogs. Other causes of acute diarrhoea in dogs can include bacterial infections, such as salmonella and E-coli, toxin exposure and even stress. Before you even try this drug, remember that there are other alternatives to Dramamine you can use that have fewer to no side effects including herbal treatments and behavioral conditioning, as well as specific dog anxiety meds and tools like anxiety vests. Note: If your pet recovers and you have leftover dry GI food, you can keep it fresh by putting it in a Ziploc® bag and placing it in the freezer for emergency use. Switching foods can also cause stomach upsets so it’s best to make diet changes gradually. Take at least three days and start by adding small amounts of the new diet to the current one.
