About this deal

But here’s one from our set anyway. I’ll be posting more as time allows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j_04lE2QzI

I live in Spain, where Santa doesn’t bring your presents on Xmas day. Oh no. The Three Kings bring your presents on 6 January. How true, how true. I always thought that John Peel lived in Stowmarket. In fact, it was a couple of miles away in a place called Great Finborough. A blue plaque on The Pettiward Hall marks this fact. “John Robert Parker Ravenscroft OBE (1939 to 2004). Pioneering and influential BBC broadcaster who helped the careers of many artists. Lived in this village from 1971 to 2004.” Karen, Phill, Andrew and I had a walk round the graveyard at the nearby St Andrew’s Church, where Peely is buried. It was moving to see him there. A great man. Even now, the majority of my music collection is from folk that I first heard on his show. The gravestone has become a little worn over the years. It certainly isn’t a “celebrity grave”. He wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Thanks for the replies re the t-shirt and the Greek. I suspected that was the phrase but wasn’t sure. I’d absolutely love to think it’s a true story. Midnight Mass Murder was dedicated to the Reverend Sarah Jenkins. “Every Christmas Eve she gets them coming out of The Chestnut Horse.” The song says it all. We were invited to “join in if you want” when they played How I Wrote Elastic Man. All grand stuff, as usual. But @ the same pedants. Do feel free to point out that it’s the arc, the circumference and most importantly the area which is reduced by choosing a point on the coast or a corner coastal town, and that the radius is just about the only thing that isn’t.

Someone was in from Chirk, or kept mentioning Chirk, which led NB to deny that he’d ever been to Chirk Airfield car boot sale but instead recommend Abergele – a recommendation which unfortunately he said rather than sang. He later rather controversially slagged off Chirk castle as a bit of a con – just a house on a hill, not really a castle. Again he could have sung this, I suppose: What line in another HMHB song is lifted from an account of a climbing trip to North Wales with OG Jones, by George Abraham? Unfortunately the band will never, ever tour overseas whatever the offer. A better option might be to do what the Irish have done and get your own HMHB tribute band”

There’s plenty of others that could be worked on similarly but this one provides the best range of angles and best, most consistent quality. All that matters to us old Haverhillians is the 1978/79 Eastern Counties League title, clinched, as chance would have it, with a 4-0 drubbing of Chatteris Town. Failing that, why not bribe the musicians at your local folk club to learn a couple of HMHB numbers and inevitably some of them will fall in love with the band and keep learning more? As an East Anglian, I just wanted to hear how Nigel enunciated it (local pronunciation Hayv’r’l – much like Chaa’rus, you’d never guess from the spelling) Agree with everyone that the Hitchers were a great opener. Congrats to Niall. The mate that joined me on the trip swears you are a metal drummer. If that is true, I will follow that musical vein as far as it goes.Interesting to see that they covered “Swords” in the encore, because every time I’ve heard the chorus of Token Covid Song, I’ve expected it to end in the chorus of “Swords”. Not Bishop Brennan arrived just as we’d been talking about him passing out at Stowmarket, and I was eventually able to answer Nigel’s quiz question about The Real Bishop’s first name (Len).

In the gap between the turns, I caught up with Lou, Graham and Sarah. Nigel/Exxo was in the midst. And there was Niall and Marcella, over from Ireland. I exchanged waves with Mike as oft before. Graham Le Taxi told me that he now has a second job. But I don’t think I could ever call him Graham Le School Bus. The travelling army of Chatteris supporters certainly suggested that the weavers’ cottages in the town were devoid of tenants that particular day. At the risk of spoiling all the positive vibes, I miss the old days of hearing there’s a new album on the way, phoning Geoff to ask how much he wants, sending a cheque and getting the album in the post a few weeks early.I dare say we’re not alone down here, I suspect there’s a growing audience for the band in NZ, I wonder what we have to do to get them to tour down here… It might actually be easier to round up all the HMHB fans and charter a flight to England. There was also a note “Switch From Guitar Amp To PA”. But I think that was an instruction, rather than a song title. At the end of their set, there was a bit of a medical drama when a guy near us passed out. Dr John swung into action, and all appeared to end well. Dr D: One small correction to your otherwise excellent review – my shirt actually said ‘Fantasy Biscuitball Runner-Up 2021/22’. I don’t have particularly high expectations of myself, but even I’d have been somewhat disappointed to finish runner-up in the 2020/21 season, as the competition hadn’t got off the ground at that point. I have considered procuring an updated shirt to also reflect last season’s achievements, but I’d need one at least a size bigger, and as my clothes tend to be falling off me at the moment I might have to get myself a bad tattoo instead. Anyhow, it was good of you to come over for a chat and to have the opportunity to say a proper hello.

You never know, there might be a line about opening up a Japanese noodle bar in the Whakapapa area.

Breaking News

Does anyone know if there is any chance of Achtung Bono, CSI: Ambleside, Cammell Laird Social Club and Trouble Over Bridgwater ever being released on vinyl? There would surely be a decent market for them. Brilliant news and as soon as I saw the new label name, I was nodding in admiration, being a true crime buff and having read about the Wallace case in great depth over the years. Later that day, more Goth was on the agenda. The Webb live just down the road from HMHB, but they were headlining an evening at The Library in Leeds, called Carpe Noctem. The only Biscuit news was that Joy Division Oven Gloves got a spin during the interval. It felt a bit out of place, but it’s always good to hear.
