About this deal

The 'pensieve' is a homonym of 'pensive', which means deep/ serious thought; it is also a pun, as it acts as a sieve of thought ( pensée in French). [1] Behind the scenes [ ] The prophecy was eventually fulfilled when Voldemort's Horcruxes were all destroyed, rendering Voldemort mortal and resulting in his final defeat and death at the hands of Harry Potter. [14] Interestingly, while Voldemort chose to mark Harry as his target due to their similarities, Neville Longbottom proved by standing up to Voldemort and destroying his last Horcrux, Nagini, that he was capable of being the other boy to meet the prophecy's requirements. Thus, both boys eventually played their part in the prophecy: Neville rendered Voldemort mortal by destroying his last Horcrux which allowed Harry to inflict the final defeating blow upon Voldemort. [14] In addition to Harry's love, the "power the Dark Lord knows not" could be Neville's courage (which enabled him to pull Gryffindor's sword out of the Sorting Hat to kill Nagini). What sort of sentencing guidelines, if any, is the Council of Magical Law subject to? If they operate anything like a Muggle court of law, they would need such guidelines to attempt to ensure equal justice under the law - that similar offenses were punished by the same standards. Silvanus Kettleburn – or Professor Kettleburn to his students – was the Care of Magical Creatures teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, before he retired and was replaced by Rubeus Hagrid in Harry’s third year. Professor Kettleburn might not have appeared in the Pensieve – after which this article series is named – but you may need to take a second look at your memories to remember reading about him. When did we meet him?

The light was coming from the Pensieve sitting on Snape's desk. The silver-white contents were ebbing and swirling within. Snape's memories... things he did not want Harry to see if he broke into Snape's defences accidentally." — The Pensieve in 1996 [src]From the experiences of Harry's classmates over the years, we know that medical magic can be used to mend broken bones, including broken noses (Neville's, OP36, was repaired by Pomfrey afterward). Why does Bagman in the present day have a nose that was apparently broken but not set properly? (The same question, of course, can be asked about Albus Dumbledore.) After Christmas holidays, Dumbledore called Harry down to his office. [6] They then watched two memories together, one in which Tom Riddle confronted his uncle Morfin Gaunt and later framed him for the murders of the Riddles, the other being a falsified memory of Horace Slughorn talking to Tom Riddle about Horcruxes. Dumbledore then told Harry that, to proceed, they required the real memory from Slughorn. [6]

Crouch's appearance suggests that Karkaroff's trial took place before that of Barty Crouch junior and the Lestranges. On a more trivial note, the elder Crouch as a young man had dark hair, whereas his son was blond. Not one of the witches and wizards in the room (and there were at least two hundred of them) was looking at him. Note that no mention is made of any witch or wizard present speaking an incantation or otherwise doing anything to make this happen. From Bagman's hearing later in this chapter, and Harry's experiences during his own disciplinary hearing - less than three months after his experience with the Pensieve - we know that the chair does not automatically bind everyone who sits in it. Also, in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry is shown inside the memory and watching from a third-person perspective. In the film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the memories in the pensive are shown from a first-person perspective. Harry saw that it was in fact a glistening strand of the same strange silvery-white substance that filled the Pensieve. Dumbledore added this fresh thought to the basin, and Harry, astonished, saw his own face swimming around the surface of the bowl. Dumbledore placed his long hands on either side of the Pensieve and swirled it, rather as a gold prospector would pan for fragments of gold ( GF30).

Harry, as we know, does not take Ancient Runes, so we don't know whether someone who has taken that class would be able to understand the Pensieve's markings. This suggests that Rookwood belongs to Ludo Bagman's father's generation, and thus is quite a few years Ludo's senior. We don't know whether Bagman senior was accused of any Death Eater involvement. Dolohov, as stated in the Daily Prophet in OP25, was convicted of the brutal murders of Gideon and Fabian Prewett, for which he received a life sentence in Azkaban. According to Mad-Eye Moody in OP9, four other Death Eaters participated in the murder, but their names had not been given as of the end of OP.

In the film, the Pensieve while in its cabinet bears a strong resemblance to a baptismal font, specifically an aspersion or affusion font, primarily used for the baptism of infants. The second memory was of Tom Riddle talking to Albus Dumbledore about the Defence Against the Dark Arts teaching position. In the memory Riddle's physical appearance had drastically changed, due to his impression into the Dark Arts. Riddle had journeyed to Hogwarts with a group of his loyal followers. Dumbledore denied him the DADA position, so he later placed a jinx upon it. This memory was foreshadowing Rowena Ravenclaw's Diadem being made into a Horcrux, as well as its final hiding place. [7] Dumbledore explained to Harry that by attempting to kill Harry, Voldemort himself singled out the only person who would be able to defeat him, and thus it was a grave error on his part to act as Trelawney said. Not all prophecies are fulfilled, and so it was because of Voldemort that the prophecy of someone being able to vanquish the Dark Lord came true. Furthermore, Voldemort handed Harry the necessary weapons for the job. Voldemort also discovered, after the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, that it caused him excruciating agony to try to possess Harry because Harry is full of love. Voldemort didn't understand this, as in his haste to mutilate his soul to create Horcruxes he never paused to think about the power of an untarnished, whole, and loving soul. [3] Love potions are actually banned at Hogwarts, so why was Slughorn allowed to have a cauldron-full in his N.E.W.T. Potions class? It's possible that Dumbledore allowed it so Harry would hear Slughorn's lecture on the dangers of love potions before he showed him the memories about Merope Gaunt and the sad childhood of Tom Riddle. It would be instructive to know, in light of this particular scandal, how Bagman did eventually get his job with the Ministry, since Rookwood certainly wasn't in a position to offer a job recommendation from inside Azkaban.
