About this deal

In the McAuslan short story "The Gordon Woman", a tale is told of a legendary woman of that clan who, upon being presented with the head of her husband, kept up her Dissonant Serenity to the confusion of his killers, delaying their departure until her own men turned up to slit their throats. In Toy Story That Time Forgot, the battle arena has the heads of several defeated toys mounted on pikes. They aren't dead, but it's unpleasant nonetheless. In Death Machines, Madame Lee invites Mr. Gioletti to dinner, where she presents him with the severed head of his limo driver Mike.

In Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight Annual #6, the Jester presents Aaron Zsasz's head to the baying crowd after he is executed by Batman. The pike was a long weapon, varying considerably in size, from 3 to 7m (9.8 to 23.0ft) long. Generally, a spear becomes a pike when it is too long to be wielded with one hand in combat. [ citation needed] It was approximately 2 to 6kg (4.4 to 13.2lb) in weight, with the 16th-century military writer Sir John Smythe recommending lighter rather than heavier pikes. [2] It had a wooden shaft with an iron or steel spearhead affixed. The shaft near the head was often reinforced with metal strips called "cheeks" or langets. When the troops of opposing armies both carried the pike, it often grew in a sort of arms race, getting longer in both shaft and head length to give one side's pikemen an edge in combat. [ citation needed] The extreme length of such weapons required a strong wood such as well-seasoned ash for the pole, which was tapered towards the point to prevent the pike from sagging on the ends, although drooping or slight flection of the shaft was always a problem in pike handling. It is a common mistake to refer to a bladed polearm as a pike; such weapons are more generally known as halberds, glaives, ranseurs, bills, or voulges. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012) features a tamer version. Leonardo presents the Super Shredder's mutated helmet to signify he has finally been killed.Cromwell's head was conclusively seen on Westminster Hall as late as 1684, and it was on the south side of the Hall. Archaeological evidence also disproved the Ashmolean skull's authenticity. It was pierced from the top, not from the bottom; and the skull had no trace of skin or hair, showing it had never been embalmed. [44] Body [ edit ] In one Predator comic, one of the characters held the titular Predator's head as a trophy at the end. The Outer Limits (1995): In "The Deprogrammers", Evan Cooper killed his former master Koltok and presented his head to Professor Trent Davis as proof. Davis then presented it to his own master Megwan, who had secretly orchestrated his rival Koltok's death. From 1659 to 1651, Cromwell led his army to stamp out resistance against his authority in Scotland and Ireland. These campaigns were extremely bloody. Through a combination of warfare, starvation, and disease, historians have estimated that up to six percent of the Scottish population died and an astonishing forty-one percent of the Irish population perished. This figures, along with the undeniable brutality that Cromwell’s forces practiced left a deep sense of hatred among much of the population in Ireland and Scotland towards Cromwell. Even today, Cromwell is a much-reviled figure in the Irish imagination, who see him as a genocidal maniac. In A Game of Thrones, King Joffrey Baratheon takes Sansa Stark to the battlements to show her the heads displayed on spikes: the one of her father Ned, whom he had executed despite promising not to, the head of her tutor Septa Mordane, and the heads of other members of her household.

A search found Bertier in Compiegne at his country estate. He was retrieved and taken by armed horseman to Paris in a cabriolet because the people wanted him to answer for starving the Third Estate. During his return trip, Bertier was noticed because of his escort, and word soon spread that he had been arrested. Unhappy citizens began to surround him and his escort, and at one point they pulled off the cabriolet’s roof, so they could better see him. It was under such circumstances that he entered Paris on the same day his father-in-law died, and when he finally reached City Hall, sixteen-hundred persons were accompanying him. The Head of Oliver Cromwell". The Illustrated London News. 15 April 1911. p.2 . Retrieved 20 May 2023. With no source of water and only limited food supplies within the Bastille, de Launay decided to capitulate on the condition that nobody from within the fortress would be harmed. [11] In a note passed out through an opening in the drawbridge, he threatened that he would blow up the entire fortress and the surrounding district if those conditions were rejected. [12] De Launay's conditions were rejected but he nevertheless capitulated reportedly after members of the garrison prevented him from entering the cellars in which the gunpowder was stored. At about 5 p.m., firing from the fortress ceased and the drawbridge was suddenly lowered. [11] 1789 engraving of the beheaded Mayor of Paris Flesselles and de Launay. As soon as Jagang touches it a few months later, it rots into a skull. Presumably, he was displeased. One twenty-first century historian summed up her opinion as to why such behavior with severed heads occurred, stating:

Decibel is thrilled to be able to exclusively share the first chapter of Head on a Pike in its entirety. It collects all of Pike’s lyrics from High on Fire’s essential 2000 debut, The Art of Self Defense, with a pair of original illustrations by Santos inspired by the album. Is it possible that “Bagdad” goes even harder when you listen while reading along to the lyrics and staring at a drawing of a hooded mystic whose body is made of the night sky?
