About this deal

Your choice of yeasts is vast. You could use a all-purpose universal wine yeast like GV1, or a specialist yeast depending on the 'style' of wine you'd like. To start with, we would just recommend an all-purpose red wine yeast for red grapes, or white wine yeast for white grapes. Alternatively you could leave your juice and rely on the natural yeasts to do the work, though that can be a risky business (see below). How much wine will my grapes produce?

Demijohns can be used in a variety of ways, from floor and table decorations to vases and even modern pendant lighting. For a unique vintage decoration, incorporate a demijohn into a vignette. How much honey do I require for 5 pounds of mead?

How many liters does a Damigiana have?

Bottle or keg your homebrew: Once fermentation is complete, you can bottle or keg your homebrew and enjoy the fruits of your labour!

First of all I’m going to say that I use no glass at all for making beer. People seem to think that glass is superior to plastic for all sorts of reasons, some reasons being better than others. Let’s take a look at some of the advantages of using glass demijohns over plastic: hours later: add sugar. If you don't want to use a hydrometer: a good guide would be to add 900 grams of granulated sugar per 4.5 litres of must and stir well with your sterilised paddle. If you want to know precisely how much sugar to add: that's what the hydrometer in your starter kit is for. The hydrometer in your kit has instructions on how to use it. If your must reading is less than 1.010, add a small quantity of granulated sugar. Stir well with a sterilised paddle and test again. Keep doing this until you get the reading up to at least 1.010. If you go higher than this, that's no problem. Bear in mind the higher the sugar content, the higher the alcohol content of the final product is likely to be. The ideal reading is between 1.080 and 1.090. (You'll find more details about using a hydrometer and how much sugar to add here.)

Why do I need steriliser?

Bubble: a bubble is a air bubble that became trapped in the glass during the manufacturing process. Bubbles are not considered damage. In fact, bubbles usually add to the appeal of old glass. Glass made after about 1920 does not usually have bubbles. What volume is a demijohn?

Other than the naming they are exactly the same thing so if I refer to it as one way or the other, hopefully you’ll know what I mean. Which Fermenter and When to Use It

I think cleaning is the key thing here in my opinion, if you use a plastic carboy (better bottle) to do your fermentation, they are going to get scratched if you clean them with any sort of abrasive pad. If you use a better bottle as your primary fermenter then the krausen that gets gummed up all the sides is going to be difficult to scrub off compared to using a glass demijohn where you can use a bottle brush. Place the demijohn’s straining bag in the funnel and place it in it. Why is it referred to as a Demijohn?
