About this deal

The IPTNIC 1080p webcam (avoid buying the 720p model, the TP01) is a relative newcomer, and its strength is that it’s the bargain-basement option. Mount your Microsoft Modern Webcam the way you want—depending on your PC and the set up in your home or office. Here are three different ways to mount your webcam. On your display Place your Microsoft Modern Webcam on top of your external display or laptop display. Rotate the base of your webcam up, so your camera sits securely on top. Those specs match up almost identically with the Logitech C920 and the Logitech C920s, though it looks like Microsoft's webcam has just one microphone, to the C920's two. Microsoft Modern Webcam: Special features We also have a Logitech C910 which is the predecessor to the C920. One of the main differences between the two is that the C920 has a different compression algorithm which makes it better suited for 1080p video chat. A good feature they both share is auto-focus. You can hold an item as close as 4 inches away from the C910 or C920 and within a couple of seconds the item will come sharply into focus (assuming you hold the object still, of course). Link to show auto-focus in action: Logitech C910 Auto-focus up close.

Flexibility in Audio Selection: Without an integrated microphone, you are free to choose the microphone of your preference, whether it's a USB microphone, a professional-grade microphone, or a headset. The webcam market is full of all kinds of different webcams, ranging from top-of-the-line 4K 120 FPS sensors to low-cost 720p cameras. The Microsoft Modern Webcam sits comfortably in the middle ground, being relatively affordable with good enough performance in well-lit environments. There’s no shortage of webcams these days, but Microsoft’s last officially branded webcam came in the late 2010s with the Microsoft LifeCam Studio. Since then a global pandemic has shaped the way we do our work, putting 1080p webcams at the top of things that are needed for any home or school setup. The resolution of the webcam matters. Most laptops still ship with 720p webcams, and a higher-resolution webcam will make you look better than your colleagues. Fixed-focus versus autofocus Autofocus, auto white balance, and low-light correction: Most webcams look pretty good with a professional lighting setup, a thoughtfully-framed and curated set, and some manual software fine-tuning. But if you don't have the space, equipment, time, or patience to perfect your picture, look for a webcam that works well out of the box. We test webcams using both default and manually-configured settings, in a number of ideal and less-than-ideal lighting scenarios. The Microsoft Modern Webcam is a great choice for anyone looking for a camera that excels in day-to-day video conferencing in apps like Microsoft Teams. If you're presenting to a large audience, or partaking in small team meetings, you can't go wrong with the Modern Webcam. The C930e has the same sensor as the C920s Pro, but it has an upgraded lens with a wider field of view — 90 degrees versus the C920s Pro’s 78 degrees. This wider field of view is useful not only because it allows you to display an unnecessary amount of your home office, but also because it adds 4x digital zoom (the C920s Pro also offers digital zoom through Logitech’s Logi Capture software). Digital zoom is useful on a webcam because zooming in gives you some control over camera positioning (tilt/pan), which is handy if your webcam isn’t ideally positioned. Adjustability: Consider a webcam that offers pan, tilt, and zoom features for better positioning and adaptability to various scenarios. I did come away rather impressed with this webcam's low-light performance too. While still quite noisy, the webcam didn't drop frames in an attempt to open up the sensor and allow more light in. I remained smooth in video, which is great to see and makes a big difference when presenting in video calls.

Also, despite this camera being made by Microsoft, it does not feature an IR sensor and thus will not work with Windows Hello. That’s not expected for an external webcam in this price range, but it’s another funny omission given how big that feature is for Microsoft. Bottom Line Some of the color temperature settings are a little strong too, and the same effect can randomly differ without anything changing in your frame. Sometimes this makes it seem like the filters you're applying aren't taking effect, because the differences between some of the effects are sometimes incredibly minor or non-existent. The Modern Webcam will be compatible with both Windows and MacOS, though it appears that some software functions will only work with PCs.

Microsoft's first webcam in years ships with "Teams Certification."

In Microsoft Teams, select Settings and more to the left of your profile picture at the top, then select Settings . Most webcams will adjust their exposure for the available lighting, but superior webcams will do so in a way that makes you look well-lit and not a webcam zombie. Noise cancellation Cost Savings: If you already own a separate microphone, choosing a webcam without a built-in microphone can be a cost-effective solution. Field of View (FOV): Webcams with wider FOVs show more of the room. This is good if there will be multiple people in the shot, or if you're planning on presenting using a visual aid such as a white board. It's not so good, however, if you have a thrown-together work-from-home setup and you don't want viewers to see the mess around you.

To physically adjust the camera, hold the base of camera in one hand. With your other hand, hold the top of the camera, and then tilt it up or down until you appear how you want in the Preview window. The Link is a very impressive webcam — maybe a little too impressive. Realistically, the Link is probably overkill for all but a very small user demographic. 4K resolution isn’t even possible in most web conferencing apps, and capture modes such as “portrait mode,”“top-down mode,” and “desktop mode” are fun to play with but aren’t terribly beneficial unless you already know how you’re going to use them.

Typically, Windows Hello is associated with depth-camera technology, which recognizes the various contours of your face, identifying you and only you. (A normal webcam doesn’t understand that it’s looking at a 3D image.) The image is then compared with a reference image which is stored during setup. The process itself is fast: It takes just a second or two for a Windows Hello webcam to recognize you, verify your identity to the PC it’s connected to via a USB cable, and log you in. Windows Hello can also read your fingerprint with a separate Windows Hello fingerprint reader, but these webcams are all you need. 1080pHonestly, many of you will probably buy this Windows Hello webcam and simply not miss the more expensive alternatives. About the only feature you may miss in this 1080p, 30fps webcam is autofocus capability, and most fixed-focus webcams are tuned for the average distance (in the HelloCam’s case, between 12.4 and 47.2 inches) that someone sits from their laptop or display. The field of view is a relatively narrow 90 degrees. After you open Microsoft Teams on your Windows 10/11 PC, here's how to use your webcam during Teams calls and meetings. Additional Features: Explore other features such as autofocus, low-light performance, and frame rate, depending on your specific requirements.
