About this deal

Cited as “The Most Influential Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy Publication” by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies. Find this book Readers who want to learn skills for balancing their thoughts, having less extreme emotional reactions, lowering their anxiety and experiencing happier moods would likely enjoy Mind Over Mood. Who would not enjoy this book? Dialogues for Discovery: Improving Psychotherapy’s Effectivenessedited by Christine A. Padesky and Helen Kennerley. Oxford University Press (in press). Repeated practice filling out Thought Records actually helps you learn to think more flexibly. After completing 20 – 40 thought records, many people report that they automatically begin to think alternative or balanced thoughts in distressing situations without writing out a Thought Record. When you reach this point, you will experience fewer and fewer situations as truly distressing, and you can spend your energy on solving what problems remain and on enjoying yourself in more situations.” Who would enjoy this book?

Of course, guided discovery must be balanced to match the time available. This is why it is important to only use guided discovery in the session to test out really central beliefs, not everything discussed. To be clear, there is lots of straightforward discussion and teaching in a CBT session. Guided discovery is only used when testing beliefs or evaluating emotional responses/behavioral choices. POTENTIAL PROBLEM 2 Discover simple yet powerful steps you can take to overcome emotional distress—and feel happier, calmer, and more confident. Frequent interviews in the print media: women’s magazines, teen magazines, health magazines, and major newspapersCBT does not suit all clients and as clients we need to try different approaches to therapy to see which is the most appropriate for our needs and works best for us. I would agree with other reviewers that there is certainly a place for 'feelings' in CBT sessions (even though it is a very 'paper-heavy' approach, with lots of tables, forms and 'homework'), but as to CBT being "the only approach proven to work" as stated by some... that is absolute and total nonsense - it is as if they see that 'paper-heaviness' is in some way 'proof' of effectiveness.

While Mind Over Mood is in some ways a self-help book (and is written in such a way that it can be used for that), it is in fact a 'treatment manual' which might be recommended to us by a therapist and is accompanied by another volume - The Clinician's Guide to Mind Over Mood - which provides guidance for therapists as to how best to use this book with clients. The idea of this book is that theoretically it is to be used in conjuction with/during/between therapy sessions with a qualified therapist.

To get personal: I have noticed some lasting differences. I’m not free of depression / bipolar, but I used to be more self-conscious and now I’m not as harsh on myself. For that I’m grateful. As someone who has done cognitive-behavioural therapy with a therapist before, I can attest that this workbook pretty much is the therapy. It’s a fantastic book full of digestible information, concrete examples, real life stories to see the therapy in action, and techniques that are broken down into small steps. This is definitely a workbook, in that you can’t just read the book and expect to feel better; you have to do the thought records and other activities. current: Designer & developer of www.Store.Padesky.com.
