Kraven's Last Hunt" has received critical acclaim and is considered one of the greatest Spider-Man stories ever written. In 2012, "Kraven's Last Hunt" was voted by readers of Comic Book Resources as the greatest Spider-Man story ever told. In his commentary on the results, Brian Cronin described the story as "a breathtaking piece of work that inspired countless imitations by other writers over the years." [6] Elsewhere, Cronin noted that by publishing the story across all three monthly Spider-Man titles, Marvel "gave the story a bit more of an 'event' feel". [3]

Soul of the Hunter is kind of a dreary story about Spiderman coming to terms with the events of Kraven’s Last Hunt. Nothing really special there, besides some outstanding artwork. But beyond the differences in subjects, there’s a fundamental difference in their understanding. “The Tyger” leaves Blake in awe, knowingly never fully able to grasp the spiritual and physical power of the animal. Kraven believes he has finally fully understood Spider-Man, but is shown to be completely wrong.Then there's the third main character, Vermin, who's an obscure villain that's a rat/human experiment gone wrong who murders/eats women at night. In a previous story arc Spidey and Cap spent an entire book taking down this character; his inclusion in this book is simply for Kraven to defeat him as easily as he did Spidey thus making him “better” than Spider-man (what a dumb character!). But really Kraven defeats both characters far too easily to convincingly claim that he’s a “better” anything, it’s just plotted in this contrived fashion to give the character some validation before getting rid of him. Kraven’s Last Hunt” is structured around the dueling, inversely moving reflections of Spider-Man and Kraven the Hunter. Issues 1 and 6 both begin with a tormented man and end with a funeral. Issues 2 and 5 both center on someone trying to gather themselves mentally to become Spider-Man. And issues 3 and 4 find hero and villain alternately at their most mentally anguished. IGN Comics ranked "Kraven's Last Hunt" the #6 on a list of the 25 greatest Spider-Man stories, noting that it "is one of the most memorable Spider-Man stories of all time, without a doubt." Kraven dons the costume of Spider-man and becomes a violent sociopathic version of our web crawler, trying to deal with his own psychosis. Kraven's Last Hunt actually holds up fairly well. The art is better than most of the art from the time period and the writing is actually some of the best Marvel had in the 1980's. Kraven has his finest hour and then Spider-Man has one of his. There are a couple moments in this storyline that remind me of Spider-Man lifting that giant hunk of machinery off of himself during the Ditko run. It shows what Spider-Man is all about. Enter Kraven, who has been obsessing over Spider-man lately and feels as a hunter Spider-man is the one that got away. Of all the creatures he has hunted Spider-man has always bested him. For Kraven, defeating Spider-Man and proving that he was worthy of taking the mantle of a great, mythic beast was the last reason to live. After years of mental anguish and with his last, madness-propelled desire attained, Kraven takes his own life. Not always you have to point the bullet to the primary target to do the wished damage. Nobody is an island. Always there is someone close.Sure, Kraven, the Hunter is known member of the rogues’ gallery of Spidey, but I am sure that anybody doing their own Top10 of favorite villains or merely mentioning the most powerful criminals of Spider-Man’s titles, when you have heavy weights like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Venom, Mysterio, Lizard, Scorpion, etc… before the publication of this story, it would be likely that many fans would omit to Kraven. Kraven's First Hunt is the title of two unconnected stories: a remake of The Amazing Spider-Man #15 (which includes Kraven's first appearance), in Sensational Spider-Man Annual '96 by J.M. DeMatteis; and the debut of Kraven's teenage daughter, Ana Tatiana Kravinoff, in The Amazing Spider-Man #565-567, who attempts to capture Spider-Man in a similar manner to Kraven in "Kraven's Last Hunt". [4] This leads into the story Grim Hunt, where Kraven's family attempt to resurrect him by sacrificing Spider-Man in an elaborate ritual, only for the ritual to be contaminated when Spider-Man's clone Kaine sacrifices himself to save Peter, resulting in Kraven being reborn as an immortal 'unlife' who can only die by Spider-Man's hand.

Even I think that the story is a statement why the super-heroes are always able to win (and survive) in the comic book reality, since over there, the super-villains didn’t work or react like the real life criminals.So, I celebrate the “balls” of J.M. DeMatteis of choosing of a kinda minor villain like Kraven, the Hunter as the focus of this powerful story. Earn Your Happy Ending: Spider-Man gets out of his grave. His name is cleared. The police even express sympathy for his ordeal of being buried alive and drugged by Kraven and he goes home to his wife. Then we have a “What If?” (Booooring) and one of those stupid satirical stories. You can just skip them. Trust me.
