Funnily enough, Rolling Stone didn’t get the point of 90-world album title. They thought it was weird for the sake of being weird. Rob Sheffield wrote, “Read it out loud and realize that it doesn't make a damn bit of sense no matter how you slice it.” If only they knew. The songs on the album are deeply personal and introspective, reflecting on Apple’s broken relationships and her struggle to cope with life’s disappointments. The lyrics are often dark and melancholic, but there is also a sense of hope in the music. Apple is able to express her emotions in a way that is both powerful and vulnerable.

The misogynistic cover story painted Apple as a dramatic, self-possessed girl, trying to get attention, but her debut album, Tidal, released two years prior in 1996, bore a different story… if you were willing to listen. It was steeped in the pain of childhood trauma, which Apple harvested for strength. She reclaimed the piece of herself that was stolen by her rapist and exposed the inner depths of her soul with complicated piano melodies and an unfaltering voice. Tidal had her speaking her mind when she was once silenced. She was unabashed, yet confused, circling together all the chaotic emotions of a 19-year-old and spinning them into something deeply poetic. Top Billboard 200 Albums – Year-End 2000". One can imagine Apple snarling that last bit of the poem into an audience of squirming, foolish critics. In a way, that’s exactly what Apple did on When the Pawn. The album was praised for its production, which was described as “uncluttered” and “spare”. Apple’s songwriting and vocal delivery were also praised, with some critics noting her ability to convey a range of emotions. The album also featured a number of guest musicians, such as pianist Jon Brion and bassist Sebastian Steinberg. When the Pawn... [2] Released by Epic Records in the United States on November 9, 1999, When the Pawn... was wholly written by Apple, with production by Jon Brion. Upon its release, When the Pawn... broke the record for longest album title at 444 characters (previously held by a volume in The Best... Album in the World...Ever!). [9] [10] Chumbawamba themselves would later hold the record with 2008's The Boy Bands Have Won, whose full title contains 865 characters, nearly twice as many as When the Pawn...'s.
