We watch how their ambitious plan plays itself out. Bulgakov's letters from the period are full of this sense of hope and despair mixed together. There is unhappiness there, but also optimism, for the finite nature of the Soviet system seemed to hang within reach in a way that it no longer would once Stalin's reign of terror took hold. It would be wrong to assume, in other words, that Bulgakov thought of himself as a candidate for literary martyrdom in 1925. It is entirely likely that he harboured real hopes of being able to say one day that he had done his bit to push communist Russia to an early grave. At the house, Sharik gets to know Dr. Preobrazhensky's household, which includes Doctor Ivan Arnoldovich Bormenthal (the professor's student and protégé) and two female servants: Zinaida Prokofievna Bunina and Darya Petrovna Ivanova. Despite the professor's vocal anti-communism, his frequent medical treatment of the RCP(b) leadership makes him untouchable. As a result, he refuses to decrease his seven-room flat and treats the Bolsheviks on the housing committee, led by Schwonder, with unveiled contempt. Impressed by his new master, Sharik slips easily into the role of "a gentleman's dog".

This anthology promises to bring – much as our four-legged furry friends do – joy and delight, and surprising depth and poignancy. It goes beyond the wet snouts and wagging tails and gets to the heart of what makes dogs our true lifelong companions. These essays are also sometimes toothy, sometimes bloody, sometimes gentle; much like dogs. A Dog's Heart (or, The Heart of a Dog) still bites strongly with sharp teeth after so much time, and, unlike a lot of other Russian golden oldies that feel old, this could have been written yesterday.Fatter than he is’ seems wrong, based on the other two, but dropping the witch business and just talking about a ‘terrible snowstorm’ makes for a much more natural-sounding English style. Meanwhile in the US, the most common translation seems to be the Mirra Ginsburg one published by Grove Press, which in my opinion is rather poor. The book was rejected for publication in 1925, due in part to the influence of Lev Kamenev, then a leading Party official. Bulgakov subsequently wrote a play based on the story in 1926 for the Moscow Art Theater. However, the play was cancelled after the manuscript and copies were confiscated by the secret police, or OGPU. Eventually, Maxim Gorky intervened to get the manuscript returned. Wells’ The Island of Doctor Moreau published in 1896 and Kristen Bakis’ less well known 1997 Lives of the Monster Dogs, a bizarre, creepy story of humanoid German shepherds strolling Manhattan as rich aristocrats. The essays see each author explore their relationship with dogs. "Carl Phillips asks how wildness is tamed and indeed, if it can be; Esmé Weijun Wang finds moments of stillness in the simple act of observing her dog; Cal Flyn befriends a sled dog in Finland," the synopsis reads. Other contributors include Chris Pearson, Jessica Pan, Buchanan, Sharlene Teo, Alice Hiller, Lee, Nell Stevens and Eley Williams, Nina Mingya Powles, Ned Beauman and Evie Wyld. this was a fantastic collection of short stories and essays by fourteen different authors. illustrated by rowan hisayo buchanan (who I met in my creative writing undergrad, hii!), we get to fall in love with each of the writer’s dogs and truly get to experience all the different emotions they bring out in us.

When the time comes to operate on the dog, however, Preobrazhensky and Bormenthal switch to representing a different kind of bourgeois intellectual - those like Trotsky and Lenin who believed that in Karl Marx they had found a scientific system which could be imposed on human beings, and proceeded to carry out a great experiment in the form of a revolution, with the Russian people as the subject, and Russia as the laboratory. Most importantly, though – the book is utterly hilarious. Narrated by Sharik, a stray dog hours from a chilly death on the streets of Moscow, the tale follows our mongrel hero through his rescue from the ‘mad Professor’ Preobrazhensky, his transformation from a dog into a man, to his life as an unruly proletarian scoundrel, mooching off his bourgeois masters. Philip Philopovich Preobrazhensky is one sorry doctor. Not only does his experiment yield a strange and frightful sort of human creature of a Frankensteinian nature, but his 'creation' starts to call him out on his own shit.
