On Creality’s official forum, you’ll find all the firmware versions available, including for all Ender 3s as well as specific hardware upgrades such as BLTouch and filament runout sensors. Marlin 2.0 Creality includes two basic models on the MicroSD card that ships with the Max Neo, a tiny rabbit, and that old 3D print test standby Benchy the tugboat. The aluminum Bowden feeder assembly is colored red as well and provides easy visibility during filament loading. Over the past few years, I’ve discovered plenty of both paid and open-source Ender 3 mods that have allowed my device to punch above its price point. Again using an included Allen wrench, rotate the screws until the tabs align with the grooves then tighten them to hold the mount securely. This upgrade effectively levels up your Ender 3 to an Ender 3 S1 in terms of pure print performance. Generally, those who’ve gone down this route build a wood frame and then attach wood panels and one acrylic panel on the front for visibility to create an enclosed space for the Ender 3. In practice, this means a more silent operation of the 3D printer. Because the electronics area cooling fan of the Max Neo is fairly loud, however, the printer still isn’t very silent.
What is it?
The idea is to use the E3D Cyclops hot end, which can jump between two filament colors or materials mid-print to mirror the performance of dual extruder setup.
I’ve had this print fail many times on my other 3D printers, especially with the temperamental wood filament. It was great to see it print so well on the Max Neo after the first try. A bonus of printing with wood PLA filament is the smell of burning wood, which I enjoy. If you pursue high-quality printing and prefer direct extruder compatible with more flexible filaments, the S1 series is worth considering. Upgraded metal extruder - This is a more durable extruder and an important reliability upgrade. Many printers in the Ender series, such as the Ender 3 V2, use a plastic extruder housing, which is a very common point of failure due to the constant tension on the plastic parts. Of course, it’s not perfect either. Even though the Bowden extruder performs well, it still gives worse print results than you would get with a direct drive extruder. I couldn’t get my printer to lay completely flat for some reason, but I remedied it by attaching small squares of double-sided mounting tape to two feet and it leveled the unit. We specifically tested the Ender 3 Max Neo with taller 3D prints to see if we could detect any Z banding, but the results were excellent. You’ll see these further down in this review.
