About this deal

While tuna can be a rich source of animal-based proteins and healthy fats, it can also be quite addicting. There is nothing fancy about this tuna recipe. I used the regular canned tuna that you can easily get in the grocery. It does not matter if you get the ones that are soaked in water or the ones in oil, as long as you buy the plain ones. Spicy tuna will do, if you like your dish spicy. However, make sure that you don’t get the one’s labeled adobo, afritada, etc. Fresh tuna is the first ingredient in this recipe, followed immediately by salmon meal and menhaden fish meal. Unfortunately, these are the only animal-based ingredients in the recipe. However, some research suggests that earlier exposure is associated with a reduced risk of asthma and eczema ( 23, 24). With a parfait, the meat is cooked first and then passed through a sieve to achieve a smooth mixture. Cream and butter are often added for added richness, along with brandy or other alcohol. I should point out that the term parfait, when discussing a savoury dish, is more used by the British than French. A parfait in French, relates to a smooth dessert.

Choose the right type of pasta. I wouldn’t make this with noodles or thin flat-shaped pasta as the sauce will slide off to the bottom of your baking dish, resulting in dried out pasta and a pool of sauce at the bottom. Go for pasta shapes such as penne, fusilli or farfalle. Cat foods made with tuna as a single source of protein aren’t particularly common, but there are plenty of recipes that include it as an ingredient. In fact, it might be better for your cat if you include tuna as a supplemental protein in his diet, given the risk for mercury poisoning. Cream cheese - full fat or reduced fat will work. Avoid the very low fat cream cheease as it tends to be watery rather than creamy. Though white tuna is considered (and marketed as) a delicacy, it also tends to contain more mercury than light tuna because the fish are bigger and more mature. Tuna in Oil, Brine, or Springwater Because tuna eat other small fish that may already be contaminated with mercury, this metal may collect and concentrate in tuna. Thus, tuna tends to be higher in mercury than other types of fish like salmon or tilapia ( 15).Diets that are high in protein have been associated with benefits for weight loss, including increased feelings of fullness and reduced cravings ( 7, 8). Quality ingredients matter, so consider a brand that uses human-grade ingredients and makes their products in human food facilities. Wet food is generally a more species-appropriate choice than dry, though you should consider freeze-dried or fresh food if you can afford it. If your feline friend prefers kibble – or if you simply find it more affordable than wet food – this Canidae limited ingredient formula is a good tuna-based option. No dry food provides the moisture your cat needs, however, so it’s wise to supplement your cat’s water intake with a wet food topper or by adding some water or broth to the dry food.

There are also some potential downsides to canned tuna specifically, including fat and sodium content and the safety of the can itself. Mercury and recommended intake of tuna Farm-raised varieties represent only 1% of what's available in the world. They either live all their lives in a hatchery or are transferred from the ocean to a tuna ranch to fatten them up for eating. Since farm-raised fish live in a restricted area with a diet specially tailored so they gain weight, they tend to be fattier and have more protein. The meat is lighter colored, has less flavor, and tends to be fishier. They are also more likely to be contaminated with anti-algae chemicals. However, they will be cheaper because the farming process costs less than the process of catching fish in the wild. In addition to healthy fats, canned tuna is also a good source of several vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin D and selenium ( 1, 2). In addition, you should look for canned tunas that are MSC certified, caught using the poll and line method, and/or that are FAD-free. Making the canned tuna choice based on the size, what it's sitting in, and other additional ingredients really depends on personal preferences. Due to these potential effects, you may want to choose BPA-free cans. However, scientists need to do more research on BPA and its effects on humans.Studies have shown that people who consume high mercury fish at least once a week have elevated mercury levels and are more likely to experience fatigue ( 17, 18). Go shopping for canned tuna in the canned fish aisle, and you’ll find yourself in muddy waters: most grocery stores carry a dozen or so brands, each offering at least a few varieties.

For a more sustainable option, look for canned tuna products with the MSC certification on the label. Other considerationsYou can either stir this tuna and sweetcorn mix through hot, freshly cooked pasta and eat straight away. Sparkes C, Gibson R, Sinclair A, Else PL, Meyer BJ.
