Llandovery is one of those small towns in Wales that you could easily miss off your Wales itinerary. There are actually lots of reasons to visit Llandovery though. It’s particularly loved by day-trippers and walkers and you will see many of them on board, clutching walking poles and thermos flasks. Watch out for the spectacular viaduct crossing at Cynghordy! Spend a morning searching for local produce, cakes, books, furnishings, gifts and a variety of vintage treasures.

Llandovery railway station is on the Heart of Wales line, with services in the direction of Swansea and of Shrewsbury. This charming market town is well-positioned to explore the surrounding national parks, hiking trails, waterfalls and the breathtaking Welsh landscapes.

Besides the splendid ruin of the town's Norman Castle stands the Heritage Centre where you can learn about Twm Sion Cati (Thomas Jones, 1530 - 1609) the notorious Highwayman, and about William Williams, Pantycelyn, (1717-91) the famous Welsh hymn-writer who wrote the words translated as 'Guide me O Thou Great Redeemer'. Llandovery is a small market town of approximately 1,700 inhabitants in the eastern part of Carmarthenshire. Stop and take time to visit this ancient Drovers' Town, and enjoy the small shops and cafes that share some of the spirit of the town, its people and environs. The River Tywi which has its origins high in the hills beyond Rhandirmwyn (now intercepted by the Llyn Brianne Dam), flows some 112 km (70 miles) to the coast at Carmarthen Bay. Centuries of winter flooding have built up an alluvial soil in the valley bottom, producing the lush grass which supports the County’s dairy industry. William Hallowes Miller FRS (1801–1880), Welsh mineralogist, helped found modern crystallography; born at Velindre The Llyn Brianne dam is 11 miles (18km) to the north is in rugged countryside above Rhandirmwyn. The route to the dam also passes Twm Siôn Cati's Cave at the RSPB's Dinas reserve.

Like many local farmers Rhodri is now part of the growing tourism sector. With his wife Carys, he runs Gelli Glamping further down the Tywi Valley. This magnificent, manmade dam is Britain’s highest dam at an impressive 91 metres tall and had super scenic surroundings.
