Week 29: Lessons 85-87: Alexander the Great, The Divisions of Alexander’s Empire, Archimedes and the Lighthouse of Alexanderia

The Holy Grail is a chalice that Jesus and his disciples supposedly drank from at the Last Supper. Interest in this cup only emerged during the Middle Ages, at which point various legends about its powers emerged. (Image credit: zemarinho via Getty Images) I have found it helpful to study history chronologically, especially for me and my older children. It has allowed us to see the cause and effects of different events throughout history. We have seen how events, ideas and beliefs have shaped the men, women and events that have come later. The Mystery of History follows this chronological approach to history and has made it easier for me and my older children to understand God’s marvelous story. Engaging Stories MOH is set up to complete about 3 lessons per week for 36 weeks in Volume 1. The other volumes have slightly less lessons but they are longer. This gives you flexibility to take your time, spread out the lessons, or dive into several activities or map work for each lesson. Is MOH secular or Christian? History from creation to our modern times are covered. No time period is left out in this series of history books. But once my older kids were in high school, working on history independently using Notgrass curriculum, I still had a middle schooler or two plus our youngest was in early elementary. So, we transitioned to doing history altogether and my middle and high schoolers worked on it independently while I started MOH Volume 1 with my youngest on her own.

The Mystery of History curriculum is a four-volume world history series created for homeschoolers that is written with a Biblical worldview. It also supports the classical approach of studying world history chronologically.

Both Volumes III and IV present lessons for 28 weeks, but it might take longer than that to complete them. The readers forVolume III and Volume IV have more text than Volume II and significantly more than Volume I. Hobar says the target audience for Volume III is primarily grades four and up, but Volume III seems to me best for grades seven through twelve simply because of the breadth and depth of information covered. Volume IV was written for grades seven through twelve but seems especially good for high school. As author Linda Hobar notes in the preface to the Student Reader, its coverage of wars and philosophy makes it inappropriate to include younger students in a number of lessons. The Mystery of History presents the biblical Creation of the world with a literal six day creation, Noah’s flood, and a resulting ice-age that fits with a biblical reading of the age of the Earth. The Mystery of History is not only written by a Christian but it also written from a Christian worldview. As my kids and I read the lessons aloud, we are continually reminded of whose history we are reading about (God’s history!). I love that my children and I can learn about difficult and often terrifying events in history through the lens of redemptive history (how God is working to save his people). This curriculum does an excellent job of telling the story of history from a Christ-centered perspective. Chronological We believe that the great Gospel blessing which Christ secures to such as believe in Him is Justification; that Justification includes the pardon of sin, and the promise of eternal life on principles of righteousness; that it is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood; by virtue of which faith His perfect righteousness is freely imputed to us of God; that it brings us into a state of most blessed peace and favor with God, and secures every other blessing needful for time and eternity. If you want a history curriculum that teaches important events with a Christian worldview, I cannot recommend this one enough. It’s comprehensive in overall history, and it teaches so much that is left out of traditional school curriculum. Your students will not only study the Middle Ages, they will also study the spread of the gospel of Jesus and early church history, the rise of some fascinating civilizations, and plenty of fun from medieval times. Volume 4 Timeline Figures –, Karl Marx, and George Washington are just some of the figures that you’ll find in this set of timeline figures. The timeline figures cover both world history and American history.
