Tatarkiewicz, Władysław. "Perfection in the Sciences. II. Perfection in Physics and Chemistry". Dialectics and Humanism. 7 (2 (spring 1980)): 139. I need to give a caveat before setting out. There is an enormous amount of variation between definitions of flower shape. Different botanists use different terms. They may choose from only a handful of shape definitions, or from an enormous selection. Many of the definitions seem to be almost inter-changeable. I’ve done my best to try and untangle some of these contradictions, but please do get in touch in the comments section if you spot glaring errors! There are many variations on this structural theme, some simple and some amazingly complex. A simple one is pictured below, a wild Nootka rose ( Rosa nootkensis, family Rosaceae) on Ebey’s Bluff on Whidbey Island. You can see the concentric arrangement of five pink petals; numerous anther-tipped stamens fanning outward; and, less distinctly, a cluster of stigmas in the center. The five modest, green sepals are out of view under the petals.a b Palca, Joe (December 26, 2011). "The Wisdom of Trees (Leonardo Da Vinci Knew It)". Morning Edition. NPR . Retrieved 16 July 2019. a b Tongway, D. J.; Valentin, C.; Seghieri, J. (2001). Banded vegetation patterning in arid and semiarid environments. New York: Springer-Verlag. Although the painting below by Spanish baroque painter Juan Sanchez Cotan initially seem austere, the potential to use them with art students is enormous. I have had a student similarly hang various vegetables and photograph them as they decay. This lead to a hugely successful project.

Artist Leonce Raphael Agbodjelou follows in the footsteps of his father, the famous Beninese photographer Joseph Moise Agbodjelou. The younger Agbodjelou has dedicated his career to capturing the people of Porto-Novo, Benin, his hometown. He uses flowers as props that help depict the contradictions of a town that wrestles with the tension between traditional and progressive views on society. Another self-explanatory term. Tubulate flowers are like little tubes. Their petals don’t splay out at the top of the tube. An example of a tubulate bloom is the Cigar flower. You may not be surprised to hear I’ve not illustrated this species.

Spirals are common in plants and in some animals, notably molluscs. For example, in the nautilus, a cephalopod mollusc, each chamber of its shell is an approximate copy of the next one, scaled by a constant factor and arranged in a logarithmic spiral. [50] Given a modern understanding of fractals, a growth spiral can be seen as a special case of self-similarity. [51]

Yet another of these flower shapes that I’ve not illustrated. Saccate flowers have their basal coralla area extended and swollen, like a bag. The corolla is fused into a tube. The distinctive bulge is always on the lower side of the flower. Sepals: These are usually the most leaf-like, and most often serve to protect the flower, especially before it has fully opened. Natural patterns form as wind blows sand in the dunes of the Namib Desert. The crescent shaped dunes and the ripples on their surfaces repeat wherever there are suitable conditions. Patterns of the veiled chameleon, Chamaeleo calyptratus, provide camouflage and signal mood as well as breeding condition. There’s rather a good link if you want to know more about labiate flower form, from Orbis consulting. A soap bubble forms a sphere, a surface with minimal area ( minimal surface) — the smallest possible surface area for the volume enclosed. Two bubbles together form a more complex shape: the outer surfaces of both bubbles are spherical; these surfaces are joined by a third spherical surface as the smaller bubble bulges slightly into the larger one.
