About this deal

Vine weevil can feedon a wide range of plants, both indoors and outdoors, but can be especially damaging to plants grown in containers. It is a verywidespread andcommon insect. The adult weevils eat leavesduring spring and summer, but it is the grubs that can cause the most damage over autumn and winter when they feed on plant roots. This damage can resultin wilting andplant death. Some species of nematodes are plant-eating, but the ones in your biological control product are insect-eating. As such they will have no effect on your plant, as they cannot consume any part of the plant.

Weevils are a group of several families of beetles in thesuperfamily Curculionoidea, there are more than 500 species in the UK. All feed on plant material, mostly live plants but a few feed on dry seeds (grain weevils) or rotting wood. Most do not cause noticeable damage to garden plants and several species are uncommon.Vine weevil is classified in a subfamily of the known as the broad nosed weevils (Entiminae), so called because the of the broad snout (rostrum) these weevils have. There are over 100 species in this subfamily in Britain. More information on broad nosed weevils from UK Beetles. A few species out of the 20,000, such as pinworm, are harmful to humans, but these are rare. Most species play a very important role in nutrient cycling and release of nutrients for plant growth. Plants growing in pots and containers, outdoors or under cover, are most likely to be severely damaged by vine weevil grubs. Plants growing in the open ground are less likely to be damaged, althoughheavy infestations ofgrubscanoccur on strawberries, Primula, polyanthus, Sedum ,Heuchera and young yew plants. Eradication more likely as works over a 2 week period where nematodes multiply until all the larvae are dead Nematode Steinernema feltiae. This nematode is sometimes supplied for control of these scale insects.Controls: The predators fungus gnat mite ( Hypoaspis miles) , mighty mite ( Macrocheles robustulus) and rove beetle ( Atheta coriaria) can be used in greenhouses. A pathogenic nematode ( Steinernema feltiae) is also available for watering into composts. To keep a minor problem at bay, one autumn treatment should be adequate. However, for a serious infestation, treat in the spring and again in the autumn. When treating pots take care that soil is not left to dry out. Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer will kill larvae present in the area and protect against further larvae damage for up to four weeks.

The parasitoids are usually specific to certain prey species and will not become a nuisance or cause harm to non-target creatures Mix this powder in a 1.5L watering can and water the soil around your plant. Keep the soil moist for two weeks. Similarly, application of fertilisers together with nematodes should be avoided, especially if this would lower the pH below 4.5.The microscopic worms travel through the soil, hunt down the larvae version of the pest, and kill them. If product is applied over the foliage, irrigate immediately with water to wash the nematodes into the soil or growing medium; keep this moist for at least two weeks after application
