About this deal

The two Z mount DX lenses launched with the camera, the Nikon Z DX 16-50mm VR and the Nikon Z DX 50-250mm VR are both attractive choices for those who want to keep their camera kit small and lightweight, but for those who want more lens options, there are plenty of excellent Z-mount full-frame lenses already available, as well as older Nikon F lenses (both DX and FX) using the FTZ adapter. While testing out the camera, I purposefully limited myself to only the two DX kit zoom lenses the camera came with, so that I can demonstrate their capabilities and see if they are sufficient for most day-to-day needs of photographers. NIKON Z 50 + NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR @ 18.5mm, ISO 100, 3 sec, f/5.6 I set +1 to get slightly more colorful shots of people in the STANDARD setting. People start looking bad with too much saturation; just as often I'll leave it at 0.

Twin control dials immediately stand out, making it much easier to control key exposure settings than on the single-dial D5x00 DSLRs. Nikon's 'Easy Exposure Comp.' option means you can access exposure compensation in Shutter- or Aperture-Priority modes, without the need to press any other buttons. Magnesium alloy construction also hints at higher-end ambitions. One of the big advantages of mirrorless cameras is that you are no longer limited to a tiny viewfinder. DX DSLR cameras often have very small viewfinders, which makes it difficult to see subjects clearly and to be able to properly focus on them. Electronic viewfinders on mirrorless cameras are very different in this regard, allowing for much larger viewfinder sizes. As a bonus, full HD can also be recorded in slow motion, at 30 or 25 fps x 4 or 24 fps x5. And not surprisingly, Nikon offers Time-Lapse Movie and an interval timer, too. Although there's no separate input for an external microphone or headset, the camera has a well-rounded feature set for motion. What I didn't like I love how the Z50 balances flash perfectly for fill-flash. If I hadn't used flash, Zoey would have been nothing but a shadow as the only other source of light was a window behind Zoey — and I love the color rendition! Nikon reserves the right to change the appearance and specifications of the hardware and software described in these specifications at any time and without prior notice. Nikon will not be held liable for damages that may result from any mistakes that this manual may contain.

A side view showing the various ports. The 3.5mm mic port is located behind its own rubber flap. Note the Micro USB port, which facilitates USB charging on the move The Z50's user interface is essentially the same as that of the existing Z models, which is to say: essentially the same as those of Nikon's DSLRs. This means a menu system beginning to creak under the weight of its many, many options, but with one of the best-arranged Custom Settings menus in the business. It's a system with clearly marked sub-sections and consistent color-coding, which makes it easy to navigate and doesn't demand that you memorize it. USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) is a similar concept and feature of some Z series camera bodies including, but not limited to the Z 5, Z 6II, Z f, Z 7II, Z 8 and Z 9 cameras.

There’s the same kind of layout, viewfinder placement and button layout, only in a more compact frame.

Nikon Z50 Review: Performance

The Z50 uses a 2.36M-dot OLED viewfinder. There are, of course, much higher resolution viewfinder panels now available, but this is pretty much standard for a camera of this price.

In addition to the regular mechanical and silent electronic shutter options there is a third "Electronic First Curtain" option at MENU > CUSTOM SETTING MENU (pencil icon) > dShooting/display > d4 Shutter type. Not to keep the pro’s feeling left out, also announced today is the fastest NIKKOR lens ever made, the new NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens. The 58mm Noct is a one-of-a-kind lens that pays homage to the extraordinary optical legacy that the previous Noct-NIKKOR 58mm f/1.2 lens established, while demonstrating the superiority and potential of the Nikon Z Mount. Created for the most discerning photographers, the new Noct lens is an exclusively manual focus prime lens with an incredible maximum aperture of f/0.95 for a truly dramatic depth of field and next-level low light performance. This threshold can be a specific shutter speed or set to 'Auto,' which relates the threshold to the current focal length. The Auto setting can be fine-tuned to use shutter speeds that are faster or slower than 1/focal length.
