Let’s Go Crazy by Prince. Cut in to this song after a minute or so, when the hook asserts itself – and then go for it!

Now we can’t have a princess with Aladdin, Danny Hendrix was a joy to watch as Aladdin, he comes across to the audience as that boy next door that we all want to be friends with, and innocence that may get him into trouble and that’s the charm of Aladdin as he is used by the evil Abanazar for the magical lamp. a b c Moody, Jane. "Grimaldi, Joseph (1778–1837)", Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edition, January 2008, accessed 21 October 2011. Pantomime encourages its audience to be as loud as possible, and it’s normal to shout out at the stage throughout the show. Common examples of audience participation include: Often a favourite pantomime tradition for adults in the audience, the ancient art of double entendre is an established element of the panto form. It walks a fine line: too blue and the adults will feel embarrassed, not blue enough and the children might understand it! Here’s one of my favourites from the Ugly Sisters in Cinderella:

Aladdin and John Evans returned to Venue Cymru for an overdue Christmas Pantomime

Because of the low status and the disappearance of its libretti, the Roman pantomime received little modern scholarly attention until the late 20th century, despite its great influence upon Roman culture as perceived in Roman art, in statues of famous dancers, graffiti, objects and literature. [8] After the renaissance of classical culture, Roman pantomime was a decisive influence upon modern European concert dance, helping to transform ballet from a mere entertainment, a display of technical virtuosity, into the dramatic ballet d'action. It became an antecedent which, through writers and ballet-masters of the 17th and 18th centuries such as Claude-François Ménestrier (1631–1705), John Weaver (1673–1760), Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810) and Gasparo Angiolini (1731–1803), earned it respectability and attested to the capability of dance to render complex stories and express human emotion. [15] Development in Britain [ edit ] Do You Hear the People Sing? From Les Miserables. Brilliant for defiance – eg. Robin and the Outlaws against the Sheriff of Nottingham. Christmas and Pantomime: it’s as traditional as pudding and tinsel. This great British institution has been enthralling the public for the best part of 200 years. Curiously enough, it has its origin in the continental Europe and was not always confined to the winter holidays. A note about writing for the pantomime comic. Lots of comics will have their own material, so think about ways to incorporate that into the script. There’s also lots of opportunity for physical comedy from the comic, so make the most of that. Silliness and games usually wins the day where the comic is concerned. If you’ve done your job well, they’ll be one of the audience’s favourite characters by the time they leave the show. Comedy Duo Mysterious Girl by Peter Andre. Good to mark Cinderella’s arrival at the Ball and the reggae beat makes it a bit different. Boase, G. C. Payne, William Henry Schofield (1803–1878)", Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004; online edition, May 2007, accessed 22 October 2011 Big production - even the smallest amateur company will pull out all the stops for their pantomime. This is not a genre concerned with either realism or artistic minimalism. Sets are large and elaborate, the dame will usually have the most magnificent over-the-top dress (and change it every couple of scenes) and there is often a scene involving gunge, foam or other "messy" fun. Aladdin often features a scene in the Chinese laundry run by Widow Twankey, providing an excuse for filling the stage with suds. Or characters will randomly decide to do some baking, resulting in flour being thrown about. Elaborate lighting and abundant use of pyrotechnics abounds; the villains and other minor antagonists often enter from stage left to a barrage of green lighting and smoke, sometimes even with stage fireworks going off. Some theatres even employ strobe lights! During the Curtain Call, the already-elaborate costumes of the characters are replaced with the same, but outfitted in shiny gold, silver, electric blue and neon green. Shake a Tail Feather from the Blues Brothers. Introduce with “…Let’s dance!” and it’s a brilliant celebratory song.Grimaldi. It was at this point that performances started to be based around European fairy tales and children’s stories, a tradition that remains to this day. School’s Out by “one of our dear little girls, Alice Cooper.” Splendidly ludicrous at the end of a School Room scene.

Lipton, Martina. "Localism and Modern British Pantomime", A World of Popular Entertainments, Gillian Arrighi and Victor Emeljanow (eds.), Cambridge Scholars Publishing (2012) ISBN 1443838047 p. 56. And the standard cast of characters, which as we’ve said is a common feature on modern panto, started to crystalise. Here are some of the main ones… The Song That Goes like This from Spamalot. Brilliant witty song and great to subvert between a villainous would be lover and and a very unwilling Principal Girl as in my versions of Camelot the Panto and Aladdin. Wedding Day by Hot Buttered Rum. Really enjoyable, up tempo Blue Grass song. Excellent for involving lots of the company in a Western themed panto.Camp: To the average person in Britain or Ireland, if you wanted to define "camp", you would probably say "like a pantomime". Friendly gay jokes are a bit of a tradition in the panto, too. Accidentally in Love by Counting Crows. Used in Shrek 2. Great for lovers surprised by the speed of their falling in love – as panto lovers often are! And great to involve the Chorus. One Smart Fellow He Felt Smart A bit scatological, but very funny when kids get it wrong. Take at a brisk pace to ensure that it does go wrong.

Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon. The Lovers are all sorted – great to involve the whole company. Easy to change to ‘Get up’ and dance and involve the audience as well. The Chorus, who can be considered extras on-stage, and often appear in multiple scenes (but as different characters) and who perform a variety of songs and dances throughout the show. Because of their multiple roles, they may have as much stage-time as the lead characters themselves. Many theatres in cities and towns throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland continue to present an annual professional pantomime. Pantomime is also popular with amateur dramatics societies throughout the UK and Ireland, and during the pantomime season (roughly speaking, late November to February) productions are staged in many village halls and similar venues across the country. I have to say that having a panto this year has been something that we have all needed, Venue Cymru has brought a smile to the many faces during the performance that I went to see last night, the cast is superb, the sets are pure panto, the music is wonderful to listen to and the return of John Evans to Venue Cymru has really made my year with such fantastic comedy moments that even now as I type these ar can feel that my cheek muscles have been used more than usual for all the laughing during the show. There are many pantomime traditions and conventions, although it isn’t necessary to include every single one in a modern show. A lot of panto traditions are kept in because they are tried and tested ways to make people laugh and delight in the magic of the season. While at Drury Lane Theatre in the early part of the 19th century, traditional English folk tales were introduced to the pantomime repertoire which slowly replaced the Harlequinades.
