About this deal

Volder, A; Watson, Viswanathan (2009). "Potential use of pervious concrete for maintaining existing mature trees during and after urban development". Urban Forestry & Urban Greening. 8 (4): 249–256. doi: 10.1016/j.ufug.2009.08.006. How a rainwater harvesting system works – Image courtesy of P&H Environmental Ltd How Permeable or Porous Driveways are Built Now that we know the broad types of drainage options available we can examine the advantages and disadvantages of each specific types of driveway or patio. Inexperienced contractors –while these materials have been used for a long time, many driveway contractors are still unfamiliar with the technical detail. This means that you may find they install the driveway without using the correct sub-bases, and that your choice of porous material is a bit pointless. Always search for the best and most experienced contractor you can. In this situation as we have mentioned, you can’t use gravel as it will cause other issues and the other option of a porous hard surface simply won’t absorb all the rainwater before it runs off,

A wide variety of edge restraints are available and range from timber to plastic to concrete to steel or aluminum as well as cut stone

Being lightweight, the pavers are easy to lay and once down can be filled with aggregate, gravel, soil and grass seed or mulch. The honeycomb structure of Porous Pavers reduces puddling and encourages rainwater to drain away. Surface elevation of pavers shall be 1/8 to inch above adjacent drainage inlets, concrete collars or channels. These are either plastic or concrete grid systems, set down into the ground or led on top that reinforces it, stopping your wheels creating ruts but allowing the grass to grow between the mesh. Plastic systems can also be used to stabilise a gravel driveway (see below) and stop the gravel spreading away from the driveway.

If you understand how they work it is easy to understand what needs to be done to ensure that you permeable driveway remains permeable and porous and in tip top working condition. Porous asphalt has many benefits for land development plans because it makes better use of the land and conserves water. Carry it off to a soakaway or rain garden, where it can then be absorbed by the soil or removed without entering the drainage system

Mechanized installation, specialized paver installation equipment speeds construction time by installing approximately one square yard (one square meter) of pavers at a time in rapid succession. Permeable pavers also contribute to urban heat island mitigation. Unlike traditional pavement materials that absorb and radiate heat, permeable pavers have a lower thermal mass that reflects more sunlight and absorbs less heat, which helps in reducing the overall temperature in urban areas.
