As opposed to the GeerTop PYRAMID, the IMP has just one side opening entrance, but along with greater internal floor space it also has a fairly decent size vestibule area for some gear storage. Initially we only connected the two side guylines, and even with just the two pegged out, the tent seemed very stable, we couldn't imagine the tent going anywhere very fast if you pegged out all six guylines and 16 tent pegs! The two air vents on the side of the flysheet are both held open by the side guylines. We played about a little with this until we realised that you can close up the vent by simply running the guyline attached to the top of the vent through the loop on the lower vent material (see third photo below). Note: I only use cm length units so that the subsequent calculation of fabric areas and weights will be correct. Also, for similar reasons, the fabric weight must be in grams/square meter (gsm). How it is made
Pyramid tarps and tents have a fairly large footprint, which can make it difficult to pitch in heavily forested terrain where you need to wedge them between trees. They also work best on flat and even ground, unlike a flat tarp, where you can pitch one side considerably higher than the other and still get a viable shelter. If the only ground you can set a pyramid on is uneven, you’re probably going to get some “wall sag” instead of a drum-tight pitch on the high side. This can reduce the amount of useable space you have inside, but is unlikely to have a serious functional impact. Setting up a pyramid tent is relatively straightforward, thanks to its simple design. Ventilation is important, especially in the summer, so make sure there are plenty of vents for good air flow. Hang on in there. Yes, there are loads of types of tents to choose from. But many of them can be immediately discounted, depending on your needs and wants. Types of tents Stake out the front corners. The side baseline of the shelter should be tight. Watch the angle formed by the rear and side walls of the shelter at the rear corners and position the front corners so that the rear corners form 90-degree angles. The goal is to have a perfectly square/rectangle floor base. As viewed from overhead the corners and corner guylines form a perfect X shape right out to the stakes. It also means the formation of the tent wall seams is just a continuation of the pyramid canopy lay flat seams (see photo above). It also means that the stretch of each wall and skirt section is compatible with the associated tent panel above it. This equal stretching contributes to a better tent pitch. A breathing polyester tent seam is prepared for sewing a lay-flat seam that connects the one-piece tent panels. The panel incorporate the main pyramid surface, the bell wall and the snow/bug skirt. Low profile spring clamps and plastic pads have been used to hold the lay flat seam glueing points together in preparation for the first row of stitches to make the sewing easy.
