About this deal

A. Bath. I still have family and friends there and of course I have those strong connections made during my childhood there. Sandwiched together with raspberry jam and dusted on the top with caster sugar, the cake possibly started out in the nursery, according to English Heritage. In the early Victorian period, afternoon tea consisted of seed cake and fruit cake but for safety reasons the Victoria Sponge was prepared to stop youngsters choking on pieces of fruit or seeds.

The TV star explained: 'I no longer prepare a Victoria sandwich with the traditional creaming and folding methods, as this all-in-one method gives excellent results every time. All that creaming of butter and sugar. I never seem to have the butter soft enough. And then the tins have to be lined and everything has to be just so.'

The flavors are incredible, but it’s those different textures coming together that make this dessert super delicious. Every bite feels like the first!

Thousands of Albanians descend on streets of Central London to 'celebrate independence day' with police confirming arrests have been made for shooting fireworks and throwing bottles We’ in this instance most likely means our top chefs, but she is right that the fact we live in a beautiful location does have an impact on our national foodie profile because it draws lots of the top chefs and also we have a healthy tourist profile which means they have passing trade to sell their food to.

Happily, Glenn will be present at the Big Cake Show, as will a number of other well known and not so well known baking experts – all on hand to share their knowledge, enthusiasm and skills. For teaspoon (tsp) and tablespoon (tbsp) measurements, please use measuring spoons* and not the type of spoons you eat with. Again this will ensure accuracy and provide the best results.

A. I trained at what was the Bath College of Domestic Science (now Bath Spa University, I think) and so that two year course had an enormous influence on my cooking and what I went on to do next. SARAH VINE: Where DO Harry and Meghan stand in relation to this puppet of theirs? If the Duke and Duchess of Sussex don't denounce the poison in Omid Scobie's new book, we can only assume they endorse it A. If you are making a sponge cake, it should be springy to the touch and shrinking slightly from the sides of the tin. You should aim for a cake that is pale and golden brown in colour. If you are making a fruit cake, gently insert a fine skewer, which will come out clean if the cake is properly cooked. The cake should be light brown for a light fruit cake and dark brown for a traditional rich, fruit cake. An Eton Mess is a brilliant example of beauty in simplicity. Or perhaps make something lion-shaped to symbolise the monarchy.

If you want your shop-bought mince pies to create a real wow factor with your guests, try some of the following ideas. Mulled wine, port, hot chocolate (family-friendly or with a splash of rum), sloe or damson gin are always well received with mince pies – as is a nice cup of refreshing Earl Grey tea. I prefer mine served with clotted cream or Cumberland rum butter – a combination of dark brown muscovado sugar, butter, rum and a hint of nutmeg. Measure the sponge ingredients into a large bowl or freestanding mixer and beat for about 2 minutes with an electric whisk until beautifully smooth and lighter in colour. The time will vary according to the efficiency of the mixer.

I highly recommend giving Mary’s recipe a go as it is, including the homemade pastry (it really is easy). But it’s no crime to use frozen shortcrust pastry or a frozen or refrigerated pastry case if you prefer. Be careful not to overcook the quiche. One of the secrets to a good quiche is a perfectly fluffy egg filling. So 20 to 30 minutes in the oven is long enough. The lovely Mary says that if you do overcook it your quiche filling can become spongey and full of air. In the Scrummy household we’ve always loved to pair quiche with baked potatoes and a simple salad for dinner. But also it makes a great lunch for guests – with a chilled glass of something, of course.
