Harry successfully ran the business until his death in 1891, when the business moved to another H.J. Neill of the next generation. However, like many Irish whiskey brands, Gelston’s disappeared as sales slumped as a result of Prohibition in the USA during the 1920s.

Spanish Earl Irish Whiskey intrigued the judges with its “wet washing on the nose”, leading to flavours of “toffee, butterscotch and orchard fruit” on the palate.Eight Silver medals completed the opening round, with winners including Tullamore Dew Caribbean Rum Cask Finish, Ha’Penny Original, and Wise Owl Whiskey. The fourth group consisted of chair Nicola Carruthers, deputy editor of The Spirits Business; Nicola Thomson, director of Practical Matters; Toshio Ueno, vice-president and executive instructor at Sake School of America; and Sara Jane Eichler, founder of the Negroni Club UK. The brand was founded in 1830 by Samuel Gelston, a wine and spirits merchant based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He had a shop located in Corporation Street in the city and his Gelston's Old Irish Whiskey became very popular. Upon his death the brand was sold to Harry J Neill, who expanded the business, the popularity of the whiskey and its distribution significantly.
