The kits breakdown as follows: A multivitamin supplement. Turtles rarely get the nutrition they need in captivity from their food alone. This will provide the missing essential minerals and trace nutrients that tortoises don’t get from their food. Housing kits contain everything you need to build a terrarium or vivarium, while a starter kit contains absolutely everything you need to house an exotic pet. There will be no need to worry about whether the enclosure is suitable and you can rest easy that your pet is safe. Many of the products in our range have been designed by furniture specialists to fit into the style of a wide variety of rooms, ensuring that your pet’s new home blends in seamlessly with your own. What are the main types of housing and starter kits? Tortoise starter kits contain everything you need to give your tortoise a comfortable home. We sell a variety of Tortoise starter kits including both kits made by Swell and those made by other manufacturers. Each Swell tortoise kit is different but they all contain an enclosure for your pet (either a tortoise table or vivarium), heating (such as a heat mat 0r heat bulb) and substrate. The other tortoise starter kits we sell from other brands may differ in their contents.

Supermarket lettuces and cucumbers are tolerated but it is preferable to grow or collect weeds which are freely available for most of the year. Minerals and Vitamins As most tortoises are herbivores a range of natural growing fresh weeds will form the main part of their diet.Tortoises will also need a good source of heat, ordinary light and a source of UVB light. This does two things; it provides a basking source for the tortoise and a source of UVB. Remember, tortoises are cold blooded and cannot regulate their physiological body temperature as we can. In the wild, tortoises would find a sunny spot and warm up to become active and hungry. UVB light is normally obtained directly from the sun outside and is needed for tortoises to convert calcium in the diet into healthy shell and bone. Indoors this must be provided by artificial means. Silver - These kits are great for beginners as they include all of the basic bits of equipment as well as a few advanced pieces that will become permanent additions to your reptile keeping tool kit. UVB lighting is essential towards the health and well-being of all reptiles. Tortoises are essentially ‘solar powered’ in that they require the suns rays to function. We include essential heating and lighting by way of a combined Heat and UVB bulb, in a dome fitting, secured to the upright on the table. This enables you to replicate the temperatures from their natural habitat. With basking temperatures of around 36°C for most species, we include a digital thermometer for piece of mind to ensure the correct temperature requirements are being met. The lighting is recommended to be on for 12 hours during the day, so we provide a 24 hour timer to allow everything to be switched off at night to allow for a natural night time temperature drop.

The tortoise will need a secure outdoor enclosure for the warmer weather. This needs to be secure from escape and have a substantial mesh frame over the top to keep out birds, foxes, rats and other predators. It should be well drained in the case of sudden downpours and have shade and shelter. It needs to be located in an area that receives both sun and shade. Tortoise food mix which will be the staple of their diet. This type of food contains dried plant and fruit pieces that are high in fiber and an essential part of a tortoise’s diet.

The ReptiHabitat™ Bearded Dragon Kit is a great way for hatchlings and new Bearded Dragon keepers to get started! Because tortoises need to thermoregulate you will need to be able to provide a temperature in a hot spot at one end of the enclosure of about 30°C(90°F) and a cooler end (where you can place a little hide for him to sleep) of about 20°C (70°F), and because your tortoise table is inside your house there will be no need for any lighting or heating at night.
