About this deal

An animated conversation about how great it would be turned into an enthusiastic letter to Top Trumps Towers (yes, really!) which turned into a phone call, which turned into a visit and ….. eventually….. the full blown card game.

Last known eruption: Yasur has been in a continuous state of activity since at least 1774, when Captain James Cook first reported the sighting of ‘ a Volcano which threw up vast quantities of fire and smoak and made a rumbling noise which was heard at a good distance.’ Vesuvius– one of the best known volcanoes in the world – has been dormant since its last eruption in 1944. It looms over the sprawling city of Naples, in central Italy, and is watched closely by scientists from the Osservatorio Vesuviano– the world’s oldest volcano observatory. Fuji is one of the most iconic and easily recognised volcanoes in the world. It lies in Honshu island, Japan, a little south of Greater Tokyo: one of the largest urban centres in the world with a population of around 35 million.

The Government of Vanuatu have a Geohazards Observatory, with information about all of their active volcanoes. There is also some introductory information on VolcanoWorld. Height– 3794 m. Erebus is one of the tallest ‘free standing’ mountains in the world, and the second highest volcano in Antarctica, after Mount Sibley.

Probably the most exciting phase of this project is yet to come, however - seeing some interesting projects take place using our funds that might otherwise never happened. We have started the ball rolling with a pilot project in the region where STREVA is working: a community project on the slopes of Cotopaxi (Ecuador) which was designed to get school children talking to their elders about memories of past volcanic activity. The children’s notes and drawings will be made into a book and sold to tourists to raise funds for equipment for their school. And that is what it was all about in the first place! Alternatively, if you're looking for an activity that children can be getting on with individually, why not use these colourful volcano top trumps cards as part of a revision exercise? This is a fantastic way to engage visual learners! Two categories: the Volcanic Explosivity Index and height will be familiar concepts but others less so.Last known eruption: Increasing seismic activity since mid-April 2015, culminated in a series of ash and steam-rich explosions in August now continuing into September 2015. Cotopaxi is frequently active but the last eruption before the current episode was in the 1940s. It has the distinction of having one of the longest historical records of activity in the Americas too, the first recorded eruption was in 1532!

Erebus is a stratovolcano, and one of four volcanoes on Ross island; the others being called Mts. Terror, Bird and Terra Nova. Erebus is not associated with a tectonic plate boundary – instead, it is an intra-plate volcano that lies in a rift, where the Earth’s crust has been thinned by slowly being stretched. It is one of several volcanoes in West Antarctica that are likely to be fed from a deep-seated hot upwelling, or plume, inside the Earth. Geologically, the erupted products – alkali rich lavas called phonolites – are similar to those erupted at Mt Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania. Deadliness. 1000. The 1883 eruption was one of the deadliest on record – with many tens of thousands of people killed both by the hot pyroclastic flows, that rushed off the flanks of the collapsing volcano, and skittered across the sea, causing havoc for people living along the nearby coastline; and also by the huge tsunamis that were triggered as the volcano collapsed into the emptying magma chamber, forming a huge flooded caldera. Find out the devastation potential for Etna, unpredictability of Mount St. Helens and the wow factor of Stromboli in this edition of Top Trumps - Volcanoes We limited ourselves to the following bits of information about a volcano, and created an equation to calculate devastation potential using the following data, which are widely available:Devastation Potential– 648. This is a large volcano with a history of damaging eruptions next to one of the larger cities in Italy, so the devastation potential is high. Pumice deposits from the May 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens, lying on top of a pine forest, that was flattened by the opening phases of the eruption. Photo: David Pyle. Fun fact– Fuji may be the source of the oldest known Sci-Fi story: the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, which dates from the 9th or 10th century. Height.Height in metres above sea level ( Between 0 and 5897). This presented an interesting dilemma: do we take the measurement from sea level to the summit. or, in the case of volcanoes which are also islands, should we measure the height all the way from the sea floor? Ocean island volcanoes begin their lives as submarine volcanoes and eventually emerge from the sea and continue to grow by eruption. This means their true height could be much larger than those of continental volcanoes. Mauna Kea, in Hawaii for example rises 4,205 metres above sea level, but 10,200 metres from its ocean base to its summit – that’s nearly 2 kilometres taller than Mount Everest! To keep it simple, our statistics are actual heights, in metres abovesea level, taken from the Smithsonian Global Institution Global Volcanism Program.
